CAMPAIGN: DIESEL ENGINE WATER-IN-FUEL DETECTOR SYSTEM

CONDITION

GENERAL MOTORS HAS DETERMINED THAT ON SOME 1981 DIESEL ENGINE EQUIPPED VEHICLES, THE WATER IN FUEL LIGHT MAY INADVERTENTLY COME ON, FALSELY INDICATING WATER IN THE FUEL TANK. THIS CONDITION CAN OCCUR AS A RESULT OF HIGH VOLTAGE OUTPUT ALONG WITH SUDDEN CHANGES IN SYSTEM VOLTAGE OR ELECTRICAL LOADS.

TO PREVENT THE POSSIBILITY OF THIS CONDITION OCCURRING, IT WILL BE NECESSARY TO INSTALL A FILTER CAPACITOR ACROSS THE WATER IN FUEL DETECTION LIGHT CIR- CUIT AT THE FUSE PANEL.

CARS BUILT AFTER THE FOLLOWING VIN BREAK POINTS HAVE BEEN CORRECTED BY INSTALLATION OF A CAPACITOR AT THE FUSE PANEL OR INTERNAL CHANGES IN THE TANK UNIT WATER DETECTOR ASSEMBLY.

ALL 1981 CUTLASS, 88 98 AND TORONADO DIESEL EQUIPPED CARS BUILT FROM START OF PRODUCTION UP TO AND INCLUDING THE FOLLOWING VIN:

DEALER ACTION

DEALERS ARE REQUESTED TO ADD A FILTER CAPACITOR ACROSS THE WATER IN FUEL DETECTION LIGHT CIRCUIT AT THE FUSE PANEL.

DEALERS ARE TO PERFORM THIS RECALL CAMPAIGN AT NO CHARGE TO THE OWNER ON AFFECTED VEHICLES REGARDLESS OF TIME, MILEAGE, OR OWNERSHIP, AND ARE TO CORRECT ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES IN DEALER NEW CAR INVENTORY PRIOR TO THEIR SALE.

WHENEVER A VEHICLE SUBJECT TO THIS CAMPAIGN IS TAKEN INTO YOUR NEW OR USED CAR INVENTORY IN THE FUTURE, YOU SHOULD TAKE THE STEPS NECESSARY TO BE SURE THE CAMPAIGN CORRECTION HAS BEEN MADE BEFORE RESELLING THE VEHICLES.

DEALERS ARE TO PERFORM THE CAMPAIGN SERVICES ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES AS THEY ARE BROUGHT IN FOR ANY KIND OF SERVICE UNTIL ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES HAVE BEEN CORRECTED.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. REMOVE THE SCREWS HOLDING THE SOUND ABSORBER ASSEMBLY (EXC. CUTLASS MODELS) UNDER THE STEERING COLUMN TO GAIN ACCESS TO THE FUSE PANEL.

2. REMOVE THE LOWER LEFT HAND FUSE PANEL ATTACHING BOLT AND INSTALL STAR WASHER ON THE BOLT. INSTALL BOLT THRU CAPACITOR MOUNTING BRACKET AND REINSTALL BOLT TO FUSE PANEL (FIG. 1). CARS WITH OPTION UN9 WILL HAVE A RADIO SUPPRESSION CAPACITOR INSTALLED IN THIS LOCATION. THE CAPACITOR SUPPLIED IN THE KIT HAS BEEN DESIGNED TO ALLOW FOR INSTALLATION AT THIS LOCATION IF THERE IS AN EXISTING CAPACITOR (FIG.2).

3. LOCATE THE WATER IN FUEL CIRCUIT YELLOW/BLACK STRIPE WIRE NEAR THE FUSE PANEL.

4. SPLICE THE CAPACITOR WIRE TO THE YELLOW/BLACK STRIPE WIRE USING THE BLUE SPLICE CLIP PROVIDED.

5. REINSTALL SOUND ABSORBER ASSEMBLY (EXC. CUTLASS MODELS).

6. INSTALL YELLOW CAMPAIGN CORRECTION LABEL 81-C-4 ON UPPER RADIATOR SUPPORT WHERE IT IS READILY VISIBLE.

PARTS INFORMATION

KITS WILL BE SHIPPED TO DEALERS AT NO CHARGE FOR EACH VEHICLE LISTED ON THE PRINTOUT FURNISHED. EACH KIT WILL CONSIST OF THE FOLLOWING:

ONE CAPACITOR ONE BLUE SPLICE CLIP ONE STAR WASHER

ADDITIONAL PARTS MAY BE OBTAINED FROM YOUR ZONE OFFICE.

WARRANTY CLAIM INFORMATION

DEALERS ARE TO SUBMIT CLAIMS ON THE CAMPAIGN CARDS FURNISHED WITH THE PRINTOUT USING THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION. PARTS CREDIT WILL BE ISSUED AUTOMATICALLY.

.1 HOUR FOR CLERICAL ADMINISTRATION WILL BE ADDED TO THE ABOVE OPERATION. TO SUBMIT A CLAIM ON CARS CORRECTED BUT NOT ON YOUR PRINTOUT, USE A YELLOW STRIPE CARD.
