CAMPAIGN:REPLACE DIPSTICK INCORRECT OIL LEVEL READING

MODELS/YEARS: 1986 DELTA 88 MODELS EQUIPPED WITH A 3.8L (VIN CODE 3) ENGINE

CONDITION

General Motors has determined that some 1986 Delta 88 models equipped with a 3.8L V-6 engine may have been assembled with an engine oil dipstick which will give an incorrect oil level reading. The engines in these vehicles were properly filled with oil at the time of manufacture. If the oil level is checked and then adjusted to the incorrect dipstick reading, an overfill of approximately two (2) quarts would result. This overfill may cause aeration of the oil resulting in loss of oil pressure, possible noise, and poor engine performance.

VEHICLES INVOLVED

Involved are certain 1986 Delta 88 models equipped with a 3.8L LG3 (VIN Code 3) engine within the following VIN breakpoints:

Assembly Plant Beginning Up To And Including -------------- --------- ------------------- Willow Run (W) GW429742 GW431011

DEALER ACTION

To prevent the possibility of this condition occurring on vehicles involved, the original engine oil dipstick is to be replaced with a new correct reading dipstick, part number 25522307. Dipsticks can be identified by the part number which is stamped on the dipstick blade.

Since dipsticks can be installed very easily, and because we do not want to cause owners unnecessary inconvenience, the new dipsticks have been furnished directly to affected owners of record. Owners may install them personally or they may request dealer assistance for installation.

If requested, dealers are to perform this recall campaign on affected vehicles at no charge to the owner regardless of time, mileage or ownership. In addition, dealers are to correct all affected vehicles in dealer new and used car inventory prior to their sale.

Whenever a vehicle subject to this campaign is taken into your new or used car inventory in the future, you should take the steps necessary to be sure the campaign correction has been made before reselling the vehicle.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Raise the hood of the vehicle, locate the engine oil dipstick, and replace it with the dipstick furnished.

2. Using new (furnished) dipstick, check engine oil for proper level. Adjust if necessary.

3. Install campaign identification label.

CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL INSTALLATION

Each vehicle modified in accordance with the instructions outlined in this procedure will require a Campaign Identification Label. Each label provides a space to include the campaign number, the five (5) digit dealer code of the dealer performing the campaign service, and the date the vehicle was campaigned. This information may be inserted with a typewriter or ballpoint pen. When installing label, clean the surface of the radiator upper mounting support and apply the campaign label where it is readily visible.

PARTS INFORMATION

Replacement dipsticks have been mailed directly to owners of involved vehicles. In addition, the correct quantity of engine oil dipsticks is being shipped to each dealer on a "NO CHARGE" basis (only for VINs on their printout with no owner name). They WILL NOT BE billed on the dealer's parts account. Dealers should not order from WDDGM. If transfers make additional parts necessary, contact your zone office.

Replaced parts are to be retained for disposition by zone personnel.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
