CAMPAIGN:REPLACE DIPSTICK INCORRECT OIL LEVEL READING

1986 Oldsmobile Delta 88 Equipped With a 3.8L (VIN Code 3) Engine

DEFECT INVOLVED:

General Motors has determined that some 1986 Delta 88 models equipped with a 3.8L V-6 engine may have been assembled with an engine oil dipstick which will give an incorrect oil level reading. The engines in these vehicles were properly filled with oil at the time of manufacture. If the oil level is checked and then adjusted to the incorrect dipstick reading, an overfill of approximately two (2) litres would result. This overfill may cause aeration of the oil resulting in loss of oil pressure, possible noise, and poor engine performance.

To prevent the possibility of this condition occurring on vehicles involved, the original engine oil dipstick is to be replaced with a new correct reading dipstick.

Since dipsticks can be installed very easily, and because we do not want to cause owners unnecessary inconvenience, the new dipsticks have been furnished directly to affected owners of record. Owners may install them personally or they may request Dealer assistance for installation.

If requested, Dealers are to perform this recall campaign on affected vehicles at no charge to the owner regardless of time, mileage or ownership.

SERVICE PROCEDURE:

1. Raise the hood of the vehicle, locate the engine oil dipstick, and replace it with the dipstick furnished.

2. Using new (furnished) dipstick, check engine oil for proper level. Adjust if necessary.

3. Install campaign identification label.

INSTALLATION OF CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
