REMOVAL OF MODULAR BACK GLASS USING WIRE (VIN BREAK POINT)

MODELS/YEARS: 1987 DELTA 88 COUPE

This bulletin supersedes Dealer Technical Bulletin 87-T-37 dated July 23, 1987. Updated changes have been made on items 5 and 14, plus Labor Time operation change. Please discard 87-T-37.

All 1987 Delta 88 coupe vehicles built prior to VIN H1180341/HW323294 require a tape and break procedure for back glass removal as referenced in Section 2 of the body service manual. The tape and break procedure can be found on page 2-11.

The back glass in vehicles built with the above mentioned VI numbers and higher can now be cut out with a wire, using the following procedure:

CAUTION:

Gloves and safety glasses should be worn for safety.

1. Rework a trim or fiber stick as shown in Figure 1.

2. Remove back window lower reveal molding.

3. Mask around back window opening and 5" or 6" back on roof using 2" masking tape.

4. Remove seat cushion and seat back (ses Section 9C of 1987 Body Service Manual).

5. Remove right and left quarter trim (Section 6C of 1987 Body Service Manual).

6. Loosen side quarter trim and disconnect heated back glass wire.

7. Remove high level stop lamp and bracket (Section 7C of 1987 Body Service Manual).

8. Remove parcel shelf.

9. Cut a .020 service wire to 18 foot in length.

10. From outside of vehicle, using pliers, feed one end of wire through urethane at lower right corner of back glass. Pull wire end from inside to gain sufficient length to wrap wire around wooden dowel (see Figure 2). Position wire between body and module around back glass using reworked trim or fiber stick as shown in Figure 2. Insert end of wire through urethane and install locking pliers on wire as shown in Figure 2.

11. Pull wire across bottom to left of car up left side first, across top to right and down right side.

12. Remove glass.

13. Trim excess urethane from around body opening to allow glass to fit flush on reinstallation of glass.

14. Trim excess urethane off module. When installing, use the short method as outlined in 1987 Body Service Manual Section 2-3 and apply urethane to body opening, not on glass, when installing same glass.

NOTICE: It is necessary to trim excess urethane off of both surfaces so glass will fit flush in opening.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
