CAMPAIGN: AIR CLEANER PLASTIC TRIM COVER SAFETY ACTION

1985 FIRENZA MODELS EQUIPPED WITH A 2.0L ENGINE (VIN CODE P)

CONDITION

General Motors has determined that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in some 1985 Oldsmobile Firenza models equipped with a 2.0L L4 L05 engine.

The engine air cleaner plastic trim cover on the involved vehicles, if not properly installed after servicing, may fall forward onto or be left on the hot exhaust manifold. Should this occur while the vehicle is being operated, an engine compartment fire could occur without prior warning.

To correct this condition, dealers and owners are being requested to remove and discard the engine air cleaner plastic trim cover. In addition, owners are being advised that they can have their dealer install an air cleaner trim decal in place of the plastic trim cover.

VEHICLES INVOLVED

Involved are certain 1985 Oldsmobile Firenza models equipped with a 2.0L L4 engine (VIN Code "P") within the following serial numbers:

DEALER ACTION

Dealers are to service all vehicles subject to this campaign at no charge to owners, regardless of mileage, age of vehicle, or ownership, from this time forward.

Whenever a vehicle subject to this campaign is taken into your used vehicle inventory, or it is in your dealership for service in the future, you should take the steps necessary to be sure the campaign correction has been made before reselling or releasing the vehicle.

Owners of vehicles recently sold from your new vehicle inventory are to be contacted by the dealer and arrangements made to make the required modification according to instructions contained in this bulletin.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Raise hood.

2. Remove air cleaner plastic trim cover (refer to Figure 1).

3. Clean top of air cleaner; it must be free of dirt and grease.

4. Instructions for installing the air cleaner decal may be found on the decal. Care must be taken to prevent wrinkles and air bubbles.

5. Install campaign identification label.

6. Close hood.

CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL INSTALLATION

Each vehicle modified in accordance with the instructions outlined in this procedure will require a campaign identification label. Each label provides a space to include the campaign number, the five (5) digit dealer code of the dealer performing the campaign service, and the date the vehicle was campaigned. This information may be inserted with a typewriter or ballpoint pen. When installing label, clean the surface of the radiator upper mounting support and apply the campaign label where it is readily visible.

PARTS INFORMATION

With the campaign bulletin, dealers with cars involved will receive an air cleaner decal for each vehicle listed on their campaign printout. These decals are being supplied on a "NO CHARGE" basis. They WILL NOT BE billed on the dealer parts account. Dealers should not order decals from WDDGM. Additional decals may be obtained from your zone office.
