Camshaft Cover Replacement Front

Removal Procedure

Tools Required

J 43094 Spark Plug Boot Puller

  1. Disconnect the battery ground (negative) cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .

  2. Object Number: 289500  Size: SH
  3. Remove the fuel injector sight shield. Refer to Fuel Injector Sight Shield Replacement .
  4. Remove the oil tube bolt and adjust the oil tube for access. Refer to Oil Level Indicator and Tube Replacement .

  5. Object Number: 233873  Size: SH
  6. Disconnect the PCV valve and feed tube (1) from the left (front) camshaft cover.
  7. Remove the left (front) ignition coil assembly from the left (front) camshaft cover. Refer to Ignition Coil Replacement in Engine Controls - 3.5L.
  8. Remove the engine wiring harness channel bolt from the left (front) camshaft cover. Refer to Engine Controls Component Views in Engine Controls - 3.5L.
  9. Reposition the engine wiring harness and the channel. Refer to Engine Controls Component Views in Engine Electrical.
  10. Remove and set aside the engine wiring harness with retainers from the left (front) camshaft cover. Refer to Engine Controls Component Views in Engine Controls - 3.5L.

  11. Object Number: 235193  Size: SH
  12. Remove the left (front) camshaft cover retaining bolts (2).
  13. Important: The left (front) camshaft cover seals (perimeter and spark plug) should be reused unless they are damaged or if the perimeter seal is pulled from its groove during removal.

  14. Lift the left (front) camshaft cover off the left (front) cylinder head evenly.
  15. Insert the J 43094 and rotate the spark plug boot prior to removing the boot. Remove the spark plug boots using the J 43094 . Inspect the spark boots. Replace as necessary.
  16. If necessary, disassemble the camshaft cover. Refer to Camshaft Cover Disassemble .
  17. Clean and inspect the camshaft cover. Refer to Camshaft Cover Cleaning and Inspection .

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 235193  Size: SH
  1. If necessary, assemble the camshaft cover. Refer to Camshaft Cover Assemble .
  2. Wipe the left (front) cylinder head sealing surface with a clean, lint-free cloth.
  3. Inspect the left (front) camshaft cover seals (perimeter and spark plug) for damage. Check to make sure the perimeter seal is not pulled from its groove. Replace the seals if they are damaged or pulled from the groove.
  4. Place the left (front) camshaft cover in position on the cylinder head.
  5. Install the left (front) camshaft cover retaining bolts (2).
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the left (front) camshaft cover retaining bolts to 9 N·m (80 lb in).

  7. Install the spark plug boots to the ignition coil assembly.
  8. Install the left (front) ignition coil assembly to the left (front) camshaft cover. Refer to Ignition Coil Replacement in Engine Controls - 3.5L.

  10. Connect the PCV valve and feed tube (1) to the left (front) camshaft cover.
  11. Install the engine wiring harness with retainers to the left (front) camshaft cover. Refer to Engine Controls Component Views in Engine Controls - 3.5L.
  12. Install the engine wiring harness and channel. Refer to Engine Controls Component Views in Engine Controls - 3.5L.
  13. Install the engine wiring harness channel bolt to the left (front) camshaft cover. Refer to Engine Controls Component Views in Engine Controls - 3.5L.
  14. Tighten
    Tighten the engine wiring harness channel bolts to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  15. Return the oil indicator tube to the proper position and install the oil indicator tube bolt. Refer to Oil Level Indicator and Tube Replacement .

  17. Install the fuel injector sight shield. Refer to Fuel Injector Sight Shield Replacement .
  18. Connect the battery ground (negative) cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .

Camshaft Cover Replacement Rear

Removal Procedure

Tools Required

J 43094 Spark Plug Boot Puller

  1. Disconnect the battery ground (negative) cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .

  2. Object Number: 289500  Size: SH
  3. Remove the fuel injector sight shield. Refer to Fuel Injector Sight Shield Replacement .
  4. Remove the fuel injector sight shield bracket.

  5. Object Number: 233873  Size: SH
  6. Disconnect the PCV feed tube (2) from the right (rear) camshaft cover.
  7. Disconnect the surge tank inlet hose from the surge tank. Plug the hose. Refer to Surge Tank Hose Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  8. Remove the surge tank nuts and reposition the surge tank. Refer to Radiator Surge Tank Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  9. Remove the surge tank inlet hose/pipe bracket bolt.
  10. Reposition the surge tank inlet hose/pipe and bracket.
  11. Release the clips at the power steering lines. Reposition the lines as necessary.
  12. Remove the engine wiring harness channel bolt from the right (rear) camshaft cover. Refer to Engine Controls Component Views in Engine Controls - 3.5L.
  13. Remove and set aside the engine wiring harness and channel. Refer to Engine Controls Component Views in Engine Controls - 3.5L.
  14. Remove the engine wiring harness from the retainers at the right (rear) camshaft cover. Refer to Engine Controls Component Views in Engine Controls - 3.5L.
  15. Disconnect the oxygen sensor electrical connector.
  16. Remove the right (rear) ignition coil assembly from the right (rear) camshaft cover. Refer to Ignition Coil Replacement in Engine Controls - 3.5L.

  17. Object Number: 483170  Size: SH
  18. Remove the right (rear) camshaft cover retaining bolts.
  19. Lift the right (rear) camshaft cover off the right (rear) cylinder head evenly.
  20. Important: The right (rear) camshaft cover seals (perimeter and spark plug) should be reused unless they are damaged or if the perimeter seal is pulled from its groove during removal.

  21. Lift the right (rear) camshaft cover off the right (rear) cylinder head evenly.
  22. Insert the J 43094 and rotate the spark plug boot prior to removing the boot. Remove the spark plug boots using the J 43094 . Inspect the spark plug boots. Replace as necessary.
  23. If necessary, disassemble the camshaft cover. Refer to Camshaft Cover Disassemble .
  24. Clean and inspect the camshaft cover. Refer to Camshaft Cover Cleaning and Inspection .

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 483170  Size: SH
  1. If necessary, assemble the camshaft cover. Refer to Camshaft Cover Assemble .
  2. Wipe the right (rear) cylinder head sealing surface with a clean, lint-free cloth.
  3. Inspect the right (rear) camshaft cover seals (perimeter and spark plug) for damage. Check to make sure the perimeter seal is not pulled from its groove. Replace the seals if they are damaged or pulled from the groove.
  4. Place the right (rear) camshaft cover in position on the right (rear) cylinder head.
  5. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  6. Install the right (rear) camshaft cover retaining bolts (2).
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the right (rear) camshaft cover retaining bolts to 9 N·m (80 lb in).

  8. Install the spark plug boots to the ignition coil assembly.
  9. Install the right (rear) ignition coil assembly to the right (rear) camshaft cover. Refer to Ignition Coil Replacement in Engine Controls - 3.5L.
  10. Connect the oxygen sensor electrical connector.
  11. Install the engine wiring harness to the retainers at the right (rear) camshaft cover. Refer to Engine Controls Component Views in Engine Controls - 3.5L.
  12. Install the engine wiring harness and channel. Refer to Engine Controls Component Views in Engine Controls - 3.5L.
  13. Install the engine wiring harness channel bolt to the right (rear) camshaft cover. Refer to Engine Controls Component Views in Engine Controls - 3.5L.
  14. Tighten
    Tighten the engine wiring harness channel bolts to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  15. Attach the clips at the power steering lines.
  16. Install the surge tank inlet hose/pipe and bracket with the bracket bolt. Refer to Surge Tank Hose Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  17. Install the surge tank inlet hose to the surge tank. Refer to Surge Tank Hose Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  18. Install the surge tank. Refer to Radiator Surge Tank Replacement in Engine Cooling.

  19. Object Number: 233873  Size: SH
  20. Connect the PCV feed tube (2) to the right (rear) camshaft cover.
  21. Install the fuel injector sight shield bracket.

  22. Object Number: 289500  Size: SH
  23. Install the fuel injector sight shield. Refer to Fuel Injector Sight Shield Replacement .
  24. Connect the battery ground (negative) cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
