    • J 41816 Crankshaft Balancer Remover
    • J 43010 Crankshaft Balancer Puller Adapter
    • J 43442 Flywheel Holder
    • J 36660-A Torque Angle Meter
    • J 42041 Front Cover Seal/ Balancer Installer

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  3. Remove the right front tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  4. Remove the right engine splash shield. Refer to Engine Splash Shield Replacement in Body Front End.
  5. Place an adjustable frame jackstand under the right side of the frame.
  6. Remove the 2 right side frame bolts. Refer to Frame Replacement in Frame and Underbody.
  7. Lower the right side of the frame and the engine using the jackstand in order to gain access for theJ 41816 .
  8. Remove the torque converter cover. Refer to Torque Converter Cover Replacement in Automatic Transaxle - 4T65-E.

  10. Install the J 43442 to the flywheel.

  12. Loosen the balancer bolt.

  13. Object Number: 283287  Size: SH
  14. Remove the crankshaft balancer bolt.

  15. Object Number: 283285  Size: SH
  16. Place the J 43010 for the J 41816 in position on the nose of the crankshaft.

  17. Object Number: 283281  Size: SH
  18. Mount the legs of the J 41816 into the recesses cast into the backside of the balancer inner hub.

  20. Tighten the center screw on the puller until the balancer pulls clear of the crankshaft end.
  21. Remove the crankshaft balancer.

    Important: Do not gouge the front cover when prying out the front cover seal, the seal will remove easily.

  23. Remove the front cover seal with a small pry bar or a flat-bladed tool.
  24. Clean and inspect the crankshaft balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Cleaning and Inspection in Engine Mechanical - 3.5L Unit Repair.

Installation Procedure

  1. Place the front seal (1) onto the mandrel of the J 42041 .

  2. Object Number: 287915  Size: SH
  3. Slide the mandrel onto the screw of the J 42041 .
  4. Thread the J 42041 in the crankshaft. Ensure you engage at least ten threads of the J 42041 before pressing the seal in place.

  5. Object Number: 287897  Size: SH
  6. Push the seal into position by tightening the nut on the J 42041 until the mandrel bottoms out on the crankshaft sprocket.

  7. Object Number: 287916  Size: SH

    Important: The seal should NOT be flush with the front cover.

  8. Check the installed depth of the seal (1). The seal should protrude 1-2 mm (0.039-0.078 in) from the front cover.

    Important: Do not lubricate the crankshaft front oil seal or the crankshaft balancer sealing surfaces. The crankshaft balancer is installed into a dry seal.

  10. Place the balancer in position on the crankshaft and install the J 42041  (1,2).

  12. Thread the J 42041 in the crankshaft. Make sure you engage at least ten threads of the J 42041 before pressing the crankshaft balancer in place.

  14. Push the balancer into position by tightening the nut on the J 42041 until the large washer bottoms out on the crankshaft end.
  15. Remove the J 42041 .

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  17. Install the crankshaft balancer bolt.
  18. Tighten

    1. Tighten the bolt to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).
    2. Use the J 36660-A to rotate the bolt an additional 150 degrees.

  19. Remove the J 43442 .
  20. Install the torque converter cover. Refer to Torque Converter Cover Replacement in Automatic Transaxle - 4T65-E.
  21. Use the jackstand to raise the right side of the frame to the original position.
  22. Install the 2 right side frame bolts. Refer Frame Replacement in Frame and Underbody.
  23. Remove the jackstand from under the vehicle.
  24. Install the right engine splash shield. Refer to Engine Splash Shield Replacement in Body Front End.
  25. Install the right front tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  26. Lower the vehicle.
  27. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
