Removal Procedure

    Notice: The front wheels of the vehicle must be maintained in the straight ahead position and the steering column must be in the LOCK position before disconnecting the steering column or intermediate shaft. Failure to follow these procedures will cause improper alignment of some components during installation and result in damage to the SIR coil assembly.

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.

    2. Object Number: 294376 Size: SH
  2. Position the intermediate steering shaft seal in order to provide access to the lower pinch bolt.

    3. Object Number: 294371 Size: SH
  3. Remove the lower pinch bolt from the power steering gear stub shaft (2).
  4. Remove the intermediate steering shaft (1) from the power steering gear stub shaft (2).
  5. Lower the vehicle.
  6. Remove the left instrument panel (IP) insulator. Refer to Instrument Panel Insulator Panel Replacement - Left Side in Instrument Panel, Gages and Console.

  7. Reposition the intermediate steering shaft seal in order to gain access to the upper pinch bolt.
  8. Remove the upper pinch bolt.
  9. Disconnect the intermediate steering shaft from the steering column.
  10. Remove the intermediate steering shaft.

Installation Procedure

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  1. Position the intermediate steering shaft into place.

    2. Install the upper pinch bolt from the intermediate steering shaft at the steering column.

    Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 48 N·m (35 lb ft).

  2. Install the intermediate steering shaft seal onto the steering column.
  3. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  4. Install the intermediate steering shaft (1) to the stub shaft (2) on the power steering gear.
  5. Install the lower pinch bolt of the intermediate steering shaft at the stub shaft of the power steering gear.

    6. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 48 N·m (35 lb ft).

  6. Install the intermediate steering shaft seal onto the power steering gear.
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8. Install the left IP insulator. Refer to Instrument Panel Insulator Panel Replacement - Left Side in Instrument Panel, Gages and Console.
  9. Perform the steering angle sensor centering procedure. Refer to Steering Angle Sensor Centering in Antilock Brake System.
