GENERAL MOTORS HAS DETERMINED THAT SOME 1982 OLDSMOBILE 98 MODELS EQUIPPED WITH 4.1L V-6 ENGINES AND 200 4R TRANSMISSIONS HAVE BEEN ASSEMBLED WITH THE INCORRECT SPEEDOMETER DRIVEN GEARS. THIS WILL CAUSE THE SPEEDOMETER TO INDICATE A VEHICLE SPEED APPROXIMATELY 6% TO 8% SLOWER THAN THE ACTUAL SPEED OF THE VEHICLE.

DEALER ACTION
DEALERS ARE TO REPLACE THE SPEEDOMETER DRIVEN GEAR ON ALL VEHICLES REQUIR- ING THE CORRECTION. DEALERS ARE TO PERFORM THIS RECALL CAMPAIGN AT NO CHARGE TO THE OWNERS ON AFFECTED VEHICLES, REGARDLESS OF TIME, MILEAGE OR OWNERSHIP, AND ARE TO CORRECT ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES IN DEALER NEW AND USED CAR INVENTORY PRIOR TO THEIR SALE.
WHENEVER A VEHICLE SUBJECT TO THIS CAMPAIGN IS TAKEN INTO YOUR NEW OR USED CAR INVENTORY IN THE FUTURE, YOU SHOULD TAKE THE STEPS NECESSARY TO BE SURE THE CAMPAIGN CORRECTION HAS BEEN MADE BEFORE RESELLING THE VEHICLE.
DEALERS ARE TO PERFORM THE CAMPAIGN SERVICES ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES AS THEY ARE BROUGHT IN FOR ANY KINK OF SERVICE UNTIL ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES HAVE BEEN CORRECTED.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
THERE ARE TWO DIFFERENT SPEEDOMETER DRIVEN GEARS USED ON THE VEHICLES INVOLVED, A 28 TOOTH GEAR OR A 29 TOOTH GEAR.
TO DETERMINE WHICH GEAR TO USE REFER TO THE DEALER PRINTOUT WHICH IDENTIFIES THE REQUIRED SPEEDOMETER GEAR FOR EACH VIN LISTED. THOSE VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH P215/75 TIRES REQUIRE GEAR PART NUMBER 403999 AND WILL HAVE A 9 PRINTED BETWEEN THE DEALER CODE AND THE VIN ON THE PRINTOUT. THOSE VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH P225/75 TIRES REQUIRE GEAR PART NUMBER 416765 AND WILL HAVE AN 8 PRINTED BETWEEN THE DEALER CODE AND THE VIN ON THE PRINTOUT. PARTS MANAGERS SHOULD DETERMINE THE REQUIRED NUMBER OF GEARS FROM THE PRINTOUT AND ORDER AS REQUIRED.
1. RAISE THE CAR ON THE HOIST AND CLEAN DIRT AWAY FROM THE SPEEDOMETER CABLE AREA TO PREVENT DIRT ENTERING THE TRANSMISSION.
A. IF USING A TWIN POST HOIST, KEEP FRONT SLIGHTLY LOWER THAN REAR TO REDUCE FLUID LOSS.
2. DISCONNECT THE SPEEDOMETER CABLE FROM THE TRANSMISSION.
3. PLACE A CLEAN CONTAINER UNDER THE TRANSMISSION TO CATCH ANY FLUID. REMOVE THE SPEEDOMETER DRIVEN GEAR RETAINING BOLT, RETAINER AND THE SPEEDOMETER DRIVEN GEAR AND SLEEVE ASSEMBLY.
4. USING A NEW CORRECT SPEEDOMETER DRIVEN GEAR INSTALL THE SLEEVE ASSEMBLY IN THE TRANSMISSION. INSTALL THE RETAINER AND RETAINING BOLT. USE A NEW "O" RING SEAL, LOWER CAR AND ADJUST THE FLUID LEVEL.
5. INSTALL A CAMPAIGN CORRECTION LABEL AS FOLLOWS: RECORD CAMPAIGN NUMBER 82-C-6, DEALER CODE AND DATE ON THE BLANK CAMPAIGN CORRECTION LABEL AND INSTALL ON THE RADIATOR SUPPORT WHERE IT IS READILY VISIBLE.

PARTS ARE TO BE RETAINED FOR DISPOSITION BY ZONE PERSONNEL.
WARRANTY CLAIM INFORMATION
ALL DEALERS USING THE TERMINAL SUBMISSION SYSTEM ARE TO SUBMIT CAMPAIGN CLAIMS USING THEIR TERMINAL. ALL OTHER DEALERS ARE TO SUBMIT CAMPAIGN CLAIMS USING THE "YELLOW STRIPE" CAMPAIGN CARDS.
