HISS FROM A/C SYSTEM AT MEDIUM BLOWER SPEEDS

SUBJECT: HISS FROM A/C SYSTEM AT MEDIUM BLOWER SPEEDS (INSTALL MUFFLER)

MODELS: 1994 OLDSMOBILE EIGHTY EIGHT BUILT PRIOR TO VIN 313600 1994 OLDSMOBILE NINETY EIGHT BUILT PRIOR TO VIN 301600 WITH RPO CJ2

CONDITION:

SOME OWNERS MAY COMMENT ON A HISS (SIMILAR TO FOOD FRYING) AT MEDIUM BLOWER SPEEDS WHEN THE HVAC SYSTEM IS IN OPERATION.

CAUSE:

THIS HISS IS CAUSED BY AIR MOVING THROUGH THE ASPIRATOR.

CORRECTION:

CAUTION:

WHEN PERFORMING SERVICE ON OR AROUND SUPPLEMENTAL INFLATABLE RESTRAINT (SIR) COMPONENTS OR SIR WIRING, FOLLOW PROCEDURES IN THE SERVICE MANUAL, SECTION 9J, TO TEMPORARILY DISABLE THE SIR SYSTEM. REFER TO THE APPROPRIATE SERVICE MANUAL PROCEDURES. FAILURE TO FOLLOW PROCEDURES COULD RESULT IN POSSIBLE AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT, PERSONAL INJURY, OR UNNEEDED SIR SYSTEM REPAIRS.

1. REMOVE THE RIGHT SIDE SOUND INSULATOR.

2. DISCONNECT THE ASPIRATOR HOSE AT THE JOINT NEXT TO THE CROSS CAR DUCT.

3. DISCARD EXISTING CONNECTOR.

4. REMOVE 20MM (0.78") OF HOSE FROM BOTTOM END OF THE VERTICAL SECTION OF HOSE.

5. INSTALL MUFFLER, P/N 1649040, TO BOTTOM OF THE VERTICAL SECTION OF HOSE.

6. CONNECT HORIZONTAL HOSE TO MUFFLER.

IMPORTANT: BE SURE THAT THE HOSE IN NOT KINKED.

7. TO VERIFY ASPIRATOR PERFORMANCE, THE ASPIRATOR GRILLE (NEXT TO STEERING COLUMN) SHOULD HOLD A 45MM X 45MM (1.75" X 1.75") PIECE OF 20# BOND PAPER (TYPICAL COPIER PAPER) WHEN THE BLOWER SPEED IS SET TO 3 BARS. IF PAPER IS NOT HELD, FOLLOW SERVICE MANUAL PROCEDURE FOR IN-VEHICLE TEMPERATURE SENSOR TO CHECK HOSE FOR KINKS OR PINCHES AND TO CHECK IN-VEHICLE TEMPERATURE SENSOR ASSEMBLY FOR COMPLETE CONNECTION TO KNEE BOLSTER.

8. INSTALL RIGHT SIDE SOUND INSULATOR.

PARTS ARE CURRENTLY AVAILABLE FROM GMSPO.
