IDLE STOP JUMPER WIRING HARN. CONTROL SWITCHES(BRAKE/CLUTCH)

CONDITION

GENERAL MOTORS HAS DETERMINED THAT SOME 1981 OLDSMOBILE OMEGAS EQUIPPED WITH A V6 ENGINE AND MANUAL TRANSMISSION WERE ASSEMBLED WITHOUT THE REQUIRED IDLE STOP SOLENOID JUMPER WIRE (INCLUDING DIODE). WITHOUT A DIODE AND WHEN THE SOLENOID IS DE ENERGIZED, A VOLTAGE TRANSIENT IS GENERATED IN THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEM SUFFICIENT TO "RESET" THE ECM (ENGINE COMPUTER COMMAND MODULE). THE RESET ERRONEOUSLY ACTIVATES THE "CHECK ENGINE" LAMP WHICH IS A MISLEADING INDICATION OF SYSTEM FUNCTIONING. IN ADDITION, THE BRAKE AND CLUTCH SWITCHES WHICH DEACTIVATE THE IDLE STOP SOLENOID WERE IMPROPERLY WIRED (IN SERIES RATHER THAN PARALLEL). THIS CONDITION RESULTS IN LOWER ENGINE IDLE RATES.

CARS AFFECTED

1981 OMEGA MODELS EQUIPPED WITH A V6 ENGINE, MANUAL TRANSMISSION BUILT AT WILLOW RUN (W) ASSEMBLY PLANT FORM THE START OF PRODUCTION UP TO AND INCLUDING THE FOLLOWING VIN: BW105359

DEALER ACTION

DEALERS ARE TO INSTALL THE IDLE STOP JUMPER WIRE ASSEMBLY AND ALSO REWIRE THE BRAKE/CLUTGH SWITCHES ON ALL VEHICLES LISTED ON THE PRINTOUT FURNISHED. DEALERS ARE TO PERFORM THIS CAMPAIGN ON ALL VEHICLES IN THEIR NEW CAR STOCK PRIOR TO VEHICLE SALE.

CORRECTION PROCEDURE

IDLE STOP SOLENOID JUMPER WIRE REPLACEMENT PART NO. 12016335

NOTE: AFTER VIN BW101454 THE IDLE STOP JUMPER WIRE ASSEMBLY WILL HAVE BEEN INSTALLED.

1. RAISE HOOD, DISCONNECT NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE AND REMOVE AIR CLEANER.

2. DISCONNECT THE WHITE COLORED CONNECTOR FROM THE FAST IDLE SPEED SOLENOID.

3. INSTALL CONNECTOR OR BLACK CONNECTOR ON JUMPER WIRE ASSEMBLY.

4. PLUG JUMPER ASSEMBLY INTO FAST IDLE SPEED SOLENOID.

5. ROUTE BLACK WIRE WITH RING TERMINAL TO WATER PUMP STUD AND CONNECT AS SHOWN IN FIGURE 1 FOR A GROUND. THERE MAY BE OTHER GROUND TERMINALS ATTACHED TO THIS STUD.

6. STRAP JUMPER ASSEMBLY TO EXISTING STRAP.

CONTROL SWITCHES (BRAKE/CLUTCH) JUMPER WIRE ASSEMBLY REPLACEMENT KIT NO. 12026748

1. REMOVE THE WHITE 2-WIRE CONNECTOR FROM THE CLUTCH START SWITCH LOCATED ON THE CLUTCH PEDAL BRACKET ASSEMBLY, AND REMOVE THE GREEN WIRES AND TERMINAL FROM THIS CONNECTOR (FIGURE 2). ADJUST THER TERMINAL LOCK AND INSERT THESE WIRES IN THE CAVITY OF THE 8917583 CONNECTOR SUPPLIED IN PACKAGE. (NOTE: *TWO GREEN WIRES CONNECTED TO ONE TERMINAL.)

2. REMOVE THE 2 WIRE CONNECTOR FROM THE IDLE STOP BRAKE SWITCH, AND REMOVE THE BLUE WIRE AND TERMINAL FROM THIS CONNECTOR. ADJUST THE TERMINAL LOCK AND INSERT THIS WIRE IN THE CABITY OF THE 2977253 CONNECTOR SUPPLIED IN PACKAGE (FIG. 2).

3. CUT THE BROWN WIRES 1 INCH FROM CONDUIT END AND DISCARD THESE WIRES AND CONNECTORS WHICH WERE REMOVED IN STEPS 1 AND 2. TAPE BOTH BROWN WIRES.

4. ADD THE JUMPER WIRING SUPPLIED IN PACKAGE AS SHOWN IN FIG. 3.

5. TAPE AS SHOWN IN FIG. 4.

6. CONNECT NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE.

7. INSTALL YELLOW CAMPAIGN CORRECTION LABEL 81-C-2 ON UPPER RADIATOR SUPPORT TIE BAR WHERE IT IS READILY VISIBLE.

.1 HOUR FOR CLERICAL ADMINISTRATION WILL BE ADDED TO THE ABOVE OPERATION NUMBER. A PARTS CREDIT OF $1.20 WILL AUTOMATICALLY BE PAID WITH THE OPERATION NUMBER. TO SUBMIT A CLAIM ON CARS CORRECTED BUT NOT ON YOUR PRINTOUT, USE A YELLOW STRIPE CARD.
