THIS BULLETIN IS BEING ISSUED TO REVISE THE SERVICE PROCEDURE FOR A POSSIBLE REAR SIDE GLASS UPPER SEAL ITCH CONDITION CURRENTLY IN THE 1997 U-VAN NOISE REDUCTION MANUAL. THE REVISED PROCEDURE TAKES INTO ACCOUNT THAT THE SECOND AND/OR THIRD ROW WINDOW(S) MAY HAVE AN ITCH/SQUEAK/POP CONDITION. THIS CORRECTIVE PROCEDURE HAS BEEN CHANGED TO UTILIZE DUPONT (R) KRYTOX* FLUORINATED GREASE WHICH IS AVAILABLE THROUGH MILLER-STEVENSON CHEMICALS PRODUCT NUMBER (GPL205). REFER TO THE PROPER VEHICLE SERVICE MANUAL AND OTHER SERVICE BULLETINS FOR SPECIFIC SUB-COMPONENT REMOVAL INSTALLATION AND TIGHTENING SPECIFICATIONS.
THERE MAY BE AN ITCH/SQUEAK/POP TYPE NOISE COMING FROM THE SECOND ROW WINDOW(S) AND/OR THE THIRD ROW WINDOW(S) WHILE THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION.
THE WINDOW LIP SEAL LOCATED AT THE TOP EDGE OF THE WINDOW(S) HAS RELATIVE MOTION TO ITS CONTACT SURFACE ON THE PAINTED BODY. THIS INTERFACE IS PRODUCING A SLIP-STICK CONDITION BETWEEN THE SEAL MATERIAL AND THE BODY METAL.
OPEN THE SUSPECTED WINDOW(S) AND NOTE ANY CHANGES TO THE NOISE. THIS ELIMINATES CONTACT OF THE WINDOW LIP SEAL TO THE PAINTED BODY SURFACE.
1. DETERMINE WHICH WINDOWS ARE AFFECTED.
2. REMOVE THE BACK BODY PILLAR TRIM INCLUDING THE CLEAR PLASTIC HOLE CLOSEOUTS. REFER TO BACK BODY PILLAR TRIM IN THE REAR QUARTERS SECTION OF THE SERVICE MANUAL.
3. REMOVE THE REAR LATCH MECHANISM FROM THE BODY OR DOOR FRAME. REFER TO REAR QUARTER WINDOW IN THE DOOR SECTION OF THE SERVICE MANUAL.
WHEN REMOVING THE NUTS FROM THE HINGE STUDS BE CAREFUL NOT TO DROP THEM INSIDE THE DOOR.
4. WHILE SOMEONE IS HOLDING THE WINDOW REMOVE THE NUTS FROM THE HINGE STUDS AND REMOVE THE WINDOW.
5. INSPECT AND CLEAN ANY LUBRICANT FROM THE UPPER LIP SEAL AND BODY. USE ALCOHOL TO WIPE THE ENTIRE LENGTH OF SEAL AND THE AREA ON THE BODY THAT THE SEAL CONTACTS.
6. LIGHTLY SAND THE TIP AND UPPER INBOARD SURFACE OF THE LIP SEAL ELIMINATING ANY ROUGH EDGES ALONG ITS ENTIRE LENGTH USING 400 GRIT SANDPAPER (SEE FIGURE 1).
7. APPLY DUPONT (R) KRYTOX FLOURINATED GREASE PRODUCT NUMBER (GPL 205) WITH A BRUSH ON THE INBOARD SURFACE AND THE TIP OF THE LIP SEAL ALONG ITS ENTIRE LENGTH (SEE FIGURE 2).
8. REINSTALL THE WINDOW. PLACE A 5 MM (0.2 IN.) RUBBER SPACER APRROXIMATELY 2 INCHES (50 MM) IN LENGTH ALONG THE BOTTOM EDGE OF THE WINDOW. SUPPORT THE WINDOW AT THE REAR LIFT THE FRONT OF THE WINDOW AND PUSH IT FORWARD SO THERE IS SOME VISIBLE DEFLECTION OF THE SEAL ALONG THE TOP AND FORWARD EDGES. WITH THE 5 MM (0.2 IN.) SPACER STILL IN PLACE PRESS INBOARD ON THE REAR OF THE WINDOW AND HOLD IT TIGHT TO THE BODY IN ITS CLOSED POSITION.
9. TIGHTEN THE HINGE STUDS AND LATCH MECHANISM. REFER TO REAR QUARTER WINDOW IN THE DOOR SECTION OF THE SERVICE MANUAL. WHEN TIGHT REMOVE THE SPACER AND VERIFY THERE IS AT LEAST 4 MM (0.16 IN.) OF GAP WHERE THE SPACER WAS PLACED (A 5 MM SPACER SHOULD YIELD 4 MM OF CLEARANCE WHEN THE SPACER IS REMOVED).
10. VERIFY THAT WHEN LATCHED SHUT THERE IS SOME CONTACT AND DEFLECTION OF THE SEAL TO THE BODY ALONG ITS ENTIRE LENGTH.
11. REINSTALL THE HINGE STUD CLEAR HOLE COVERS AND TRIM. REFER TO REAR UPPER QUARTER TRIM IN THE REAR QUARTERS SECTION OF THE SERVICE MANUAL.
