VARIOUS POWER SLIDING SIDE DOOR CONDITIONS

SUBJECT: VARIOUS POWER SLIDING SIDE DOOR CONDITIONS (PERFORM DIAGNOSTIC AND REPAIR PROCEDURES)

MODELS: 1997 CHEVROLET VENTURE 1997 OLDSMOBILE SILHOUETTE 1997 PONTIAC TRANS SPORT

IMPORTANT:

THIS BULLETIN IS INTENDED TO SAVE CONSIDERABLE TIME DURING DIAGNOSIS AND POSSIBLY PREVENT THE RETURN OF A PART WITH NO TROUBLE FOUND.

CONDITION #1: ============

SLIDING SIDE DOOR CLOSES ALL THE WAY AND THEN BACKS OUT TO ITS SECONDARY LATCH CONDITION.

CAUSE:

DOOR MAY BE IMPROPERLY ADJUSTED.

CORRECTION:

ADJUST REAR STRIKER.

IMPORTANT:

MAKE SURE THAT THE REAR OF THE DOOR IS SLIGHTLY OUTBOARD OF THE BODY APPROXIMATELY 2 MM (0.08 IN.). SEE FIGURE 1.

LABOR OPERATION NUMBER: B5050 USE PUBLISHED LABOR OPERATION TIME.

CONDITION #2: ============

POWER SLIDING DOOR RELAXES TO THE SECONDARY LATCHED POSITION WHILE DRIVING OVER BUMPY ROADS. DOOR ALARM AND DOOR AJAR LIGHT COMES ON. THE DOOR WILL NOT OPEN PAST THE SECONDARY LATCH POSITION WHILE DRIVING.

CAUSE:

DOOR MAY BE ADJUSTED TOO FAR INBOARD AT THE REAR FOR THE POWER SLIDING DOOR MOTOR TO OVERCOME AND FULLY LATCH INTO ITS PRIMARY POSITION.

CORRECTION:

ADJUST REAR STRIKER.

IMPORTANT:

MAKE SURE THAT THE REAR OF THE DOOR IS SLIGHTLY OUTBOARD OF THE BODY APPROXIMATELY 2 MM (0.08 IN.). SEE FIGURE 1.

LABOR OPERATION NUMBER: B5050 USE PUBLISHED LABOR OPERATION TIME.

CONDITION #3: ============

DOOR CLOSES THEN OPENS/DOOR OPENS PRIOR TO CLOSING.

CAUSE:

DOOR MAY BE IMPROPERLY ADJUSTED OR THERE MAY BE AN OBSTRUCTION. WHEN CHECKING THE ABOVE CONDITION, MAKE SURE THE DOOR IS IN MANUAL MODE. ALSO CHECK FOR OBSTRUCTIONS IN THE TRACK ASSEMBLY. POPSICLE STICKS, LIGHTERS, STONES, CANDY AND OTHER OBJECTS HAVE BEEN FOUND IN THE LOWER TRACK DURING DIAGNOSIS IN THE PAST.

CORRECTION:

A. MAKE SURE THE DOOR IS CENTERED IN THE OPENING. THE GAP AT THE FRONT OF THE DOOR AND AT THE REAR OF THE DOOR SHOULD BE APPROXIMATELY 5 MM (0.2 IN.). SEE FIGURE 1. THE GAP SHOULD BE EQUAL FRONT TO REAR.

B. WITH THE DOOR SWITCH IN THE OFF POSITION (MANUAL MODE), MAKE SURE THE DOOR HAS A SMOOTH CLOSING OPERATION. WHEN CLOSING THE DOOR, MAKE SURE THE FOLLOWING TWO AREAS DO NOT CAUSE THE DOOR TO RAISE OR LOWER WHEN CLOSING.

1. CHECK THE PIN AND POCKETS. THEY CAN LOWER OR RAISE THE DOOR WHEN CLOSED.

2. CHECK THE FRONT AND REAR LATCH ASSEMBLIES FOR PROPER ALIGNMENT TO THE STRIKER. THEY CAN RAISE OR LOWER THE DOOR. WATCH THE TOP OF THE DOOR FOR MOVEMENT UP OR DOWN WHEN CLOSING IT MANUALLY. STRIKER ALIGNMENT IS VERY CRITICAL TO THE OPERATION OF THE POWER SLIDING DOOR.

LABOR OPERATION NUMBER: B5000 USE PUBLISHED LABOR OPERATION TIME.

CONDITION #4: =============

DOOR REVERSES AS SOON AS THE PAD AND PLUNGERS COME IN CONTACT.

CAUSE:

CONDITION MAY BE DUE TO A DIRTY CONTACT SURFACE ON THE PADS OR PLUNGERS.

CORRECTION:

CLEAN THE PADS AND PLUNGERS WITH SCOTCH-BRITE(R) GENERAL PURPOSE PAD OR EQUIVALENT. AFTER CLEANING CONTACTS, LIGHTLY COAT THE CONTACTS WITH DIELECTRIC SILICONE GREASE.

LABOR OPERATION NUMBER: T2264 LABOR OPERATION TIME: 0.2 HR

CONDITION #5: ============

DOOR CLOSES ALL THE WAY, THEN OPENS.

CAUSE 1:

POWER SLIDING DOOR SWITCH PLATE OR PLUNGER PLATE MAY BE LOOSE TO ITS MOUNTING SURFACE.

CAUSE 2:

PADS AND PLUNGERS MAY LOSE CONTACT DURING CLOSING.

CORRECTION (FOR CAUSE 1):

MAKE SURE THE PUSH-IN RETAINERS ARE FULLY SEATED.

LABOR OPERATION NUMBER: T2265 LABOR OPERATION TIME: 0.2 HR

CORRECTION (FOR CAUSE 2):

1. REMOVE PLUNGER FROM DOOR BY REMOVING PUSH-IN RETAINERS.

2. REMOVE PLUNGER FROM DOOR.

3. REINDEX CONNECTOR BY RELOCATING. (REFER TO THE SERVICE MANUAL FOR PROPER REMOVAL OF TERMINALS).

- CIRCUIT #295 FROM CAVITY A TO CAVITY F. - CIRCUIT #750 FROM CAVITY F TO CAVITY A.

4. REINSTALL CONNECTOR TO PLUNGER.

5. REINSTALL PLUNGER BACK INTO DOOR USING NEW PUSH-IN RETAINERS, P/N 332364, TO SECURE PLUNGER ASSEMBLY. PRESS FIRMLY ON RETAINERS TO ASSURE THEY ARE SEATED ALL THE WAY.

6. REMOVE CONTACT PLATE FROM "B" PILLAR BY REMOVING RETAINERS.

7. REMOVE CONNECTOR FROM CONTACT PLATE.

8. REINDEX CONNECTOR BY RELOCATING. (REFER TO SERVICE MANUAL FOR PROPER REMOVAL OF TERMINALS).

- CIRCUIT #295 FROM CAVITY A TO CAVITY F. - CIRCUIT #750 FROM CAVITY F TO CAVITY A.

9. REINSTALL CONNECTOR TO CONTACT PLATE.

10. REINSTALL CONTACT PLATE TO "B" PILLAR USING NEW RETAINERS, P/N 332364. PRESS FIRMLY ON RETAINERS TO ASSURE THEY ARE SEATED ALL THE WAY.

11. CYCLE DOOR SEVERAL TIMES TO ENSURE PROPER SEATING IN TERMINALS AND CONNECTIONS.
