Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  3. Remove the right front tire and wheel.
  4. • For vehicles with steel wheels, refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation
    • For Chevrolet and Oldsmobile vehicles with aluminum wheels, refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation
    • For Pontiac and Export vehicles with aluminum wheels, refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation
  5. Remove the right engine splash shield. Refer to Engine Splash Shield Replacement in Body Front End.
  6. Install a utility stand beneath the frame right side rail in order to support the frame/powertrain.
  7. Remove the two frame RIGHT side bolts.
  8. Use the utility stand to lower the frame in order to provide access to the crankshaft balancer.
  9. Notice: The inertial weight section of the crankshaft balancer is assembled to the hub with a rubber type material. The correct installation procedures (with the proper tool) must be followed or movement of the inertial weight section of the hub will destroy the tuning of the crankshaft balancer.

  10. Remove the crankshaft balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Removal .
  11. Clean and inspect the crankshaft balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Clean and Inspect .

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the crankshaft balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Installation .
  2. Use the utility stand in order to raise the frame/powertrain.
  3. Install NEW frame right side bolts. Refer to Frame Replacement in Frame and Underbody.
  4. Install the right engine splash shield. Refer to Engine Splash Shield Replacement in Body Front End.
  5. Install the right front tire and wheel.
  6. • For vehicles with steel wheels, refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation
    • For Chevrolet and Oldsmobile vehicles with aluminum wheels, refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation
    • For Pontiac and Export vehicles with aluminum wheels, refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation
  7. Lower the vehicle.
  8. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
