DEFINITION: A loud hissing noise is heard when the engine is running and/or the steering wheel is turned.

Compare the noise level to another vehicle that is known to be operating normally.

Is the hissing noise abnormally loud?

Inspect the power steering fluid level.

Is the power steering fluid low?

Fill the power steering system. Refer to Checking and Adding Power Steering Fluid .

Is the hissing noise loud from the INSIDE of the vehicle?

The noise may be travelling into the passenger compartment through an opening in the front of the dashboard. Inspect the steering intermediate shaft seal.

Is the intermediate shaft seal damaged or installed improperly?

Go to Step 7

Repair or replace the intermediate shaft seal.

Go to Step 1

System OK

1. Ensure that the power steering hoses and pipes are routed properly (not contacting the front of the dashboard).
2. Repair or replace the hoses and pipes as necessary.

Does the customer complaint still exist?

Go to Step 8

System OK

1. Use a stethoscope in order determine the source of the noise.
2. Inspect the power steering pump and the power steering gear.
3. Repair or replace the components as necessary.
