Customer Satisfaction - Power Sliding Door Operation

Subject:99016A -- Power Sliding Door Operation

Models:Certain 1998-99 U Vans
Equipped with Gen II Power Sliding Door (RPO E58)

THIS BULLETIN REVISES AND SUPPLEMENTS CAMPAIGN BULLETIN 99016 DATED APRIL, 1999. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT SUBGROUPS "A" AND "B" IS INCLUDED AND STEP #12 OF THE SERVICE PROCEDURE IS REVISED.

FILE THIS SUPPLEMENT WITH CAMPAIGN BULLETIN 99016.

Important:

   • Refer to the special campaign video tape describing the service procedures contained in this campaign bulletin.
   • In order to minimize customer dissatisfaction and inconvenience and properly perform the service procedures contained in this campaign, it is strongly recommended that technicians review the CPT video, booklet, and special campaign video tape before proceeding with the service procedures included in this campaign.

General Motors has decided that certain 1998-99 U Vanmodel vehicles equipped with the power sliding door (RPO E58)may exhibit a condition in which the power sliding door may not operate properly and can exhibit the following conditions:

    • The power sliding door almost fully closes then consistently reverses to the full open position (reversal after plunger contact).
    • The power sliding door will not operate in power mode with any of the switches (console, B-pillar, remote keyless entry fob).

The door will operate properly in the manual mode.

To prevent the possibility of this condition occurring, dealers are to replace the power sliding door control module, adjust the cable tension, and clean the pad and plunger. On certain 1998 model U vans (regular wheelbase only), dealers will replace the power door lock detent switch.

Dealers will also inspect and, if necessary, adjust the power sliding door alignment, adjust the door striker, test the power sliding door for correct operation, and replace the sliding door front edge guard weatherstrip.

Important: Dealers should confirm vehicle eligibility through VISS (Vehicle Information Service System) prior to beginning campaign repairs. [Not all vehicles within the above breakpoints may be involved.]

Involved vehicles have been identified by Vehicle Identification Number. Computer listings containing the complete Vehicle Identification Number, customer name and address data have been prepared, and are being furnished to involved dealers with the campaign bulletin. The customer name and address data furnished will enable dealers to follow-up with customers involved in this campaign. Any dealer not receiving a computer listing with the campaign bulletin has no involved vehicles currently assigned.

These dealer listings may contain customer names and addresses obtained from State Motor Vehicle Registration Records. The use of such motor vehicle registration data for any other purpose is a violation of law in several states. Accordingly, you are urged to limit the use of this listing to the follow-up necessary to complete this campaign.

Parts Information

Important: An initial supply of modules and detent switches, equivalent to 50% of involved vehicles, required to complete this campaign will be pre-shipped to involved dealers of record. This pre-shipment will occur the week of April 27, 1999. Pre-shipped parts will be charged to dealer's open parts account.

Additional parts, if required, are to be obtained from General Motors Service Parts Operations (GMSPO). Please refer to your "involved vehicles listing" prior to ordering requirements. Normal orders should be placed on a DRO = Daily Replenishment Order. An emergency requirement should be ordered on a CSO = Customer Special Order.

Customer Notification

Customers will be notified of this campaign on their vehicles by General Motors (see copy of typical customer letter included with this bulletin - actual divisional letter may vary slightly).

Dealer Campaign Responsibility

All unsold new vehicles in dealers' possession and subject to this campaign MUST be held and inspected/repaired per the service procedure of this campaign bulletin BEFORE customers take possession of these vehicles.

Dealers are to service all vehicles subject to this campaign at no charge to customers, regardless of mileage, age of vehicle, or ownership, from this time forward.

Customers who have recently purchased vehicles sold from your vehicle inventory, and for which there is no customer information indicated on the dealer listing, are to be contacted by the dealer. Arrangements are to be made to make the required correction according to the instructions contained in this bulletin. This could be done by mailing to such customers a copy of the customer letter accompanying this bulletin. Campaign follow-up cards should not be used for this purpose, since the customer may not as yet have received the notification letter.

In summary, whenever a vehicle subject to this campaign enters your vehicle inventory, or is in your dealership for service in the future, please take the steps necessary to be sure the campaign correction has been made before selling or releasing the vehicle.

Special Tool/Video Tape/Kit [Include This Section Only If Needed]

During the week of April 27, 1999, each dealer will be shipped a video tape, for use in this campaign. This video tape is being furnished at no charge. Additional video tapes, if required, may be purchased by contacting the Dealer Business Center (DBC) at 1-888-414-6322using telephone prompts 1-2 (Monday-Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm EST).

Service Procedure

Important: If there are any questions regarding any portion of the following service procedure, please call the Technical Assistance Center (TAC) at 1-877-446-8227. Select the following prompts to have your call routed to the technical assistance engineer(s) most qualified to provide assistance:

   • Prompt 3 for Technical Assistance Consultant
   • Prompt 1 for Car Group
   • Prompt 8 for Electrical
   • Prompt 9 for Accessories

Important: Refer to the special video tape provided for this campaign, and also to the booklet in the Certified-Plus Training (CPT) package for U Van Power Sliding Door, #58001.00-B.

Before proceeding with the campaign service procedure, perform the following inspections:

    • Inspect the door track and clean as necessary following the procedure on page 5-1 of the CPT booklet.
    • Inspect the power sliding door and the door striker for proper alignment. Adjust as necessary following the procedures on pages 5-2 and 5-3 of the CPT booklet.
    • Observe the power sliding door cable for proper tension by observing the cable beneath the cable cover while operating the door in the power mode. Refer to page 5-7 of the CPT booklet. If the cable adjustment appears necessary, the adjustment can be easily accomplished while replacing the power sliding door control module. Refer to page 5-10 of the CPT booklet. Be sure to verify the correct cable adjustment as part of the service procedure.

Clarification of Subgroups

    • For subgroup "A" vehicles:
      • Replace the detent switch
      • Check the control module part number and replace it if necessary (see revised service procedure step 12 below).
      • Check, clean and adjust door track, door striker alignment and cable tension as required.
      • Check the power sliding door front edge guard and replace if necessary.
    • For subgroup "B" vehicles:
      • Do NOT replace the detent switch
      • Check the control module part number and replace it if necessary (see revised service procedure step 12 below)
      • Check, clean and adjust door track, door striker alignment and cable tension as required.
      • Check the power sliding door front edge guard and replace if necessary.

Clean VIN breakpoints for subgroups "A" and "B" are not available. Assembly plant build sequence does not always match VIN sequence, and in this campaign, there is overlap in VINs (the ending VIN in subgroup A is higher than the beginning VIN in subgroup B).

A complete listing of all vehicles included in subgroup A is included with this supplement, and has been provided to the Dealer Business Center (DBC). Any vehicle not included in subgroup A is therefore included in subgroup B (any vehicle can only be in one subgroup). Any questions about which subgroup a vehicle belongs to should be directed to the DBC at 1-888-414-6322. [The listing of involved dealers is not included in this electronic version of the campaign. Dealers should confirm eligibility through GMVIS and also refer to this bulletin to see which Subgroup a particular VIN falls under.]

Service Procedure - Revised Step 12

Step 12 of the service procedure is revised (see below). Dealers are instructed to check the part number on the control module (located on the forward, outboard surface of the module) before replacing it. If the module in the vehicle is P/N 16639440, do not replace the module. Submit a campaign claim as indicated under labor operation V0312, excluding P/N 16639440.

12. Remove the quarter panel trim and reposition. Inspect the part number label on the controller module (label is located on the forward, outboard surface of the module).

    • If the P/N is 16639440, do not replace the module ; this vehicle already has the latest version control module.
    • If the P/N is NOT 16639440, proceed to Step 13 and replace the controller module with P/N 16639440.

  3. Install the GM Campaign Identification Label.

Campaign Identification label

Each vehicle corrected in accordance with the instructions outlined in this Product Campaign Bulletin will require a "Campaign Identification Label". Each label provides a space to include the campaign number and the five (5) digit dealer code of the dealer performing the campaign service. This information may be inserted with a typewriter or a ball point pen.

Each "Campaign Identification Label" is to be located on the radiator core support in an area which will be visible when the vehicle is brought in by the customer for periodic servicing. When installing the Campaign Identification Label, be sure to pull the tab to allow the adhesion of the clear protective covering. Additional Campaign Identification Labels can be obtained from VISPAC Incorporated by calling 1-800-269-5100 (Monday-Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm Eastern Standard Time). Ask for Item Number S-1015 when ordering.
