CONDITION
GENERAL MOTORS HAS DETERMINED THAT A DEFECT WHICH RELATES TO MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY EXISTS IN SOME 1981 TORONADO MODELS. THE FRONT LEFT UPPER CONTROL ARM NUTS MAY NOT HAVE BEEN TIGHTENED TO THE SPECIFIED TORQUE. THERE IS A POSSIBILITY THAT THESE NUTS MAY LOOSEN AND COME OFF. WITH ADDITIONAL DRIVING, THE CONTROL ARM FRONT BOLT MAY EVENTUALLY WORK ITS WAY OUT OF POSITION. THIS WOULD CAUSE NOTICEABLE CHANGES IN STEERING CONTROL DURING ACCELERATION AND CORNERING. WHILE IT IS DOUBTFUL STEERING WOULD BE LOST, REDUCED CONTROLLABILITY COULD OCCUR. IF THIS WARNING OF THE NEED FOR REPAIRS IS NOT HEEDED, A VEHICLE CRASH CAN OCCUR.

DEALERS ARE TO TORQUE BOTH FRONT LEFT SIDE UPPER CONTROL ARM NUTS AS DIRECTED IN THE SERVICE PROCEDURE OF THIS BULLETIN.
DEALERS ARE TO PERFORM THIS RECALL CAMPAIGN AT NO CHARGE TO THE OWNER ON AFFECTED VEHICLES, REGARDLESS OF TIME, MILEAGE OR OWNERSHIP, AND ARE TO CORRECT ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES IN DEALER NEW AND USED CAR INVENTORY PRIOR TO THEIR SALE.
WHENEVER A VEHICLE SUBJECT TO THIS CAMPAIGN IS TAKEN INTO YOUR NEW OR USED CAR INVENTORY IN THE FUTURE, YOU SHOULD TAKE THE STEPS NECESSARY TO BE SURE THE CAMPAIGN CORRECTION HAS BEEN MADE BEFORE RESELLING THE VEHICLE.

1. RAISE THE VEHICLE ALLOWING THE FRONT WHEELS TO DROP DOWN.
2. HOLD LEFT UPPER CONTROL ARM BOLT HEAD TO INSURE BOLT DOES NOT MOVE AND TORQUE BOTH LEFT UPPER CONTROL ARM NUTS TO 95 N.M (70 FT. LBS.). LOWER VEHICLE.
3. INSTALL YELLOW CORRECTION LABEL 81-C-10 ON THE RADIATOR BAFFLE WHERE IT IS READILY VISIBLE.
