CAMPAIGN: D.I.C. DISPLAY MESSAGES NOT DISPLAYED

CONDITION GENERAL MOTORS HAS DETERMINED THAT SOME 1986 TORONADOS MAY HAVE BEEN ASSEMBLED WITH AN INCOMPLETELY PROGRAMMED BODY COMPUTER MODULE (BCM). AS A RESULT, THE INFORMATION CENTER FUNCTION OF THE ELECTRONIC INSTRUMENT CLUSTER MAY NOT BE CAPABLE OF DISPLAYING THE FOLLOWING DRIVER INFORMATION INFORMATION MESSAGES: O A/C SYSTEM PROBLEM O CRUISE SET AT O LOW REFRIGERANT O CRUISE PROBLEM O GENERATOR PROBLEM O LIGHTING PROBLEM O PRESS SYSTEM MONITOR (WITH OPTIONAL TWILIGHT TO SILENCE CHIME SENTINEL ONLY) TO CORRECT THIS CONDITION, IT WILL BE NECESSARY TO REPLACE THE EEPROM IN THE BCM AS DESCRIBED IN THE SERVICE PROCEDURE SECTION OF THIS CAMPAIGN BULLETIN. VEHICLES INVOLVED INVOLVED ARE CERTAIN 1986 TORONADOS WITHIN THE FOLLOWING SERIAL NUMBERS: ASSEMBLY PLANT BEGINNING UP TO AND INCLUDING HAMTRAMCK (U) START OF PRODUCTION GU301144 DEALER ACTION TO CORRECT THIS CONDITION, DEALERS AR TO CHECK FOR THE ABSENCE OF CERTAIN DRIVER INFORMATION MESSAGES ON INVOLVED VEHICLES AND, IF NECESSARY, INSTALL A REPLACEMENT EEPROM. DEALERS ARE TO SERVICE ALL VEHICLES SUBJECT TO THIS CAMPAIGN AT NO CHARGE TO THE OWNER, REGARDLESS OF MILEAGE, AGE OF VEHICLE, OR OWNERSHIP, FROM THIS TIME FORWARD. WHENEVER A VEHICLE SUBJECT TO THIS CAMPAIGN IS TAKEN INTO YOUR NEW OR USED VEHICLE INVENTORY, OR IS INYOUR DEALERSHIP FOR SERVICE IN THE FUTURE, YOU SHOULD TAKE THE STEPS NECESSARY TO BE SURE THE CAMPAIGN CORRECTION HAS BEEN MADE BEFORE RESELLING OR RELEASING THE VEHICLE. OWNERS OF VEHICLES RECENTLY SOLD FROM YOUR NEW VEHICLE INVENTORY ARE TO BE CONTACTED BY THE DEALER AND ARRANGEMENTS MADE TO MAKE THE REQUIRED MODIFICATION ACCORDING TO INSTRUCTIONS CONTAINED IN THIS BULLETIN. SERVICE PROCEDURE A. INSPECTION 1. RAISE HOOD AND INSTALL FENDER COVERS. 2. DISCONNECT THE LOW REFRIGERANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR CONNECTOR FROM THE LOW REFRIGERANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR. REFER TO FIGURE 1. 3. START ENGINE AND OBSERVE THE INSTRUMENT PANEL DRIVER INFORMATION DISPLAY. O IF THE MESSAGE "A/C SYSTEM PROBLEM" IS DISPLAYED, THE SYSTEM IS FUNCTIONING PROPERLY. TURN ENGINE OFF, RECONNECT THE A/C TEMPERATURE SENSOR AND CLEAR THE MALFUNCTION CODE FROM THE COMPUTER MEMORY AS DESCRIBED IN PART B OF THIS PROCEDURE. O IF THERE IS NO MESSAGE DISPLAYED, IT WILL BE NECESSARY TO REPLACE THE EEPROM. PROCEED TO PART C OF THIS SERVICE PROCEDURE. B. CLEAR BCM MALFUNCTION CODE TO CLEAR BCM CODES, PRESS THE FAN UP OR FAN DOWN BUTTONS ON THE ELECTRONIC CLIMATE CONTROL (ECC) PANEL (REFER TO FIGURE 2) AS INDICATED IN THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURE WHILE WATCHING THE INSTRUMENT PANEL INFORMATION DISPLAY. NOTE: IF AN INCORRECT BUTTON IS PRESSED DURING THIS PROCEDURE, PRESS THE BI-LEVEL BUTTON TO EXIT DIAGNOSTICS. BEGIN THE PROCEDURE AGAIN BY ENTERING DIAGNOSTICS AS BEFORE. C. EEPROM PROCUREMENT NOTE: THE EEPROM CONTAINS SPECIFIC VEHICLE INFORMATION SUCH AS: VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER, ACCUMULATED VEHICLE MILEAGE, CERTAIN VEHICLE OPTIONS, AND OTHER INFORMATION. DUE TO THIS INFORMATION, AN EEPROM CANNOT BE EXCHANGED FROM ONE VEHICLE TO ANOTHER. REPLACEMENT EEPROMS MUST BE OBTAINED THROUGH AN AUTHORIZED DELCO ELECTRONICS SERVICE CENTER. SEE "AUTHORIZED EEPROM SERVICE CENTERS" LISTED IN THIS BULLETIN. 1. CONTACT THE NEAREST EEPROM SERVICE CENTER. 2. PROVIDE THE SERVICE CENTER WITH THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION WHEN ORDERING A NEW EEPROM. O COMPLETE VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER O WHETHER OR NOT THE VEHICLE WAS BUILT FOR U.S. OR FOREIGN COUNTRY OPERATION (Z49)*. O WHETHER OR NOT THE VEHICLE IS EQUIPPED WITH TWILIGHT SENTINEL OPTION (T82)*. O WHETHER OR NOT THE VEHICLE IS EQUPPED WITH VOICE MODULE OPTION (UV1)*. O CURRENT MILEAGE OF VEHICLE. *OPTION CODES ARE LISTED ON THE SERVICE PARTS IDENTIFICATION LABEL LOCATED ON THE INSIDE OF THE TRUNK LID. 3. THE REPLACEMENT EEPROM WILL BE RECEIVED WITH A CLAIM FORM FROM THE SERVICE CENTER. THE CLAIM FORM IS TO BE COMPLETED BY THE DEALERSHIP AND RETURNED TO THE SERVICE CENTER WITH THE MAL- FUNCTIONING EEPROM. ONE COPY OF THE CLAIM FORM IS TO BE RETAINED BY THE DEALERSHIP AND ATTACHED TO THE REPAIR ORDER. FAILURE TO RETURN THE MALFUNCTIONING EEPROM WITH THE CLAIM FORM WILL RESULT IN THE ASSESSMENT OF A $200.00 CORE CHARGE. ZONE OFFICES WILL BE NOTIFIED OF ANY EEPROMS NOT RETURNED WITHIN 60 DAYS. ALL REPLACED EEPROMS RETURNED TO THE SERVICE CENTER WILL BE FORWARDED TO DELCO ELECTRONICS FOR EVALUATION AND READING. 4. PROCEED TO PART D OF THIS SERVICE PROCEDURE FOR EEPROM INSTALLATION. D. EEPROM INSTALLATION 1. OPEN I.P. COMPARTMENT DOOR. 2. DISCONNECT STOP STRAPS. 3. REMOVE SCREWS ATTACHING DOOR TO HINGE. 4. REMOVE I.P. COMPARTMENT DOOR. 5. REMOVE RELAY CENTER BRACKET ASSEMBLY AND POSITION ASIDE. 6. REMOVE FUSE PANEL AND POSITION ASIDE. 7. WITH IGNITION SWITCH OFF, REMOVE ELECTRICAL CONNECTORS FROM BCM AND LOOSEN NUTS ATTACHING BCM TO BRACKET. 8. REMOVE BCM. 9. REMOVE 4 SCREWS FROM ACCESS COVER AND REMOVE COVER. REFER TO FIGURE 3. 10. REMOVE EEPROM AS FOLLOWS: USING THE ROCKER TYPE PROM REMOVAL TOOL (FIGURE 3), ENGAGE ONE END OF THE EEPROM CARRIER WITH THE HOOK END OF THE TOOL. PRESS ON THE VERTICAL BAR END OF THE TOOL AND ROCK THE ENGAGED END OF THE EEPROM CARRIER UP AS FAR AS POSSIBLE. ENGAGE THE OPPOSITE END OF THE EEPROM CARRIER IN THE SAME MANNER AND ROCK THIS END UP AS FAR AS POSSIBLE. REPEAT THIS PROCESS UNTIL THE EEPROM CARRIER AND THE EEPROM ARE FREE OF THE EEPROM SOCKET. 11. INSTALL EEPROM MOUNTED IN CARRIER, EEPROM SOCKET. SMALL NOTCH IN CARRIER MUST BE ALIGNED WITH SMALL NOTCH IN SOCKET. PRESS ON EEPROM CARRIER UNTIL IT IS FIRMLY SEATED IN THE SOCKET. DO NOT PRESS ON EEPROM; ONLY THE CARRIER. 12. INSTALL ACCESS COVER AND SECURE WITH FOUR SCREWS. 13. REINSTALL BCM (REVERVE STEPS 1 THROUGH 7). 14. PROCEED TO PART E OF THIS SERVICE PROCEDURE. E. VERIFY DRIVER INFORMATION MESSAGE 1. DISCONNECT THE LOW REFRIGERANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR CONNECTOR FROM THE LOW REFRIGERANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR. REFER TO FIGURE 1. 2. START ENGINE AND OBSERVE THE INSTRUMENT PANEL DRIVER INFORMATION DISPLAY. 3. THE MESSAGE "A/C SYSTEM PROBLEM" SHOULD DISPLAY. 4. TURN ENGINE OFF AND RECONNECT LOW REFRIGERANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR. 5. CLEAR BCM MALFUNCTION CODE. REFER TO PART B OF THIS SERVICE PROCEDURE. F. CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL INSTALL A CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL. EACH VEHICLE MODIFIED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE INSTRUCTIONS OUTLINED IN THIS SERVICE PROCEDURE WILL REQUIRE A CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL. EACH LABEL PROVIDES A SPACE TO INCLUDE THE CAMPAIGN NUMBER, THE FIVE (5) DIGIT DEALER CODE OF THE DEALER PERFORMING THE CAMPAIGN SERVICE, AND THE DATE VEHICLE WAS CAMPAIGNED. THIS INFORMATION MAY BE INSERTED WITH A TYPEWRITER OR BALLPOINT PEN. WHEN INSTALLING LABEL, CLEAN THE SURFACE OF THE RADIATOR UPPER MOUNTING SUPPORT AND APPLY THE CAMPAIGN LABEL WHERE IT IS READILY VISIBLE. PARTS INFORMATION WHEN REQUIRED A EEPROM IS TO BE OBTAINED FROM ONE OF THE FOLLOWING AUTHORIZED EEPROM SERVICE CENTERS: AUTHORIZED EEPROM SERVICE CENTERS AUTO.
