General Motors has determined that some 1989 Oldsmobile Toronado and Trofeo model vehicles may have been assembled with front drive axle nuts that may loosen slightly. If this occurs, the clamp load for the wheel bearing may decrease. Although wheel retention and steering control will not be affected, this condition could result in noisy front wheel bearings and lead to reduced bearing life.
To prevent this condition from occurring, dealers will be required to replace both front drive axle nuts on all affected vehicles. In addition, on some vehicles dealers are to inspect and replace, if necessary, affected wheel bearing assemblies. Specifics are detailed in the VEHICLES INVOLVED and SERVICE PROCEDURE sections of this bulletin.
All 1989 Toronado and Trofeo model vehicles within the following VIN breakpoints:
Group 1 Group 2 ------- ------- Beginning Through and Including Beginning Through and Including
KU300001 KU300995 KU300996 KU301851
There are 955 vehicles in Group 1, and 856 vehicles in Group 2 for a total of 1851 vehicles affected.
EACH GROUP ABOVE HAS A SEPARATE SERVICE PROCEDURE.
Group 1 vehicles should require LESS THAN 10% of the wheel bearing assemblies to be replaced.
Group 2 vehicles should NOT require any wheel bearing assembly replacement.
Dealers are to service all vehicles involved in this campaign, at no charge to owners, regardless of mileage, age of vehicle, or ownership.
Whenever a vehicle subject to this campaign is taken into your new or used car inventory, or it is in your dealership for service, you are to ensure the campaign correction has been made before selling or releasing the vehicle.
Dealers are to contact owners of vehicles recently sold from your new vehicle inventory and arrange for the campaign correction to be performed.

Oldsmobile Division is releasing Campaign 89-C-05 involving some 1989 Oldsmobile Toronado and Trofeo model vehicles which may have been assembled with front drive axle nuts that may loosen slightly. If this occurs, the clamp laod for the wheel bearing may decrease resulting in reduced bearing life or bearing failure. To prevent this condition from occurring, dealers will be required to replace both front drive axle nuts on all affected vehicles. In addition, on some vehicles-dealers are to inspect and replace, if necessary, affected wheel bearing assemblies. Specifics are detailed in the VEHTCLES INVOLVED and SERVICE PROCEDURE sections of Product Campaign Bulletin 89-C-05.
Enclosed with this letter are: Two Product Campaign Bulletins 89-C-05. Copy of Owner Letter.
Dealers with vehicles to correct will also receive one Printout of Vehicle Identification Numbers, owner names and addresses in VIN sequence. This data will enable you to follow-up with involved owners.

Your cooperation in completing this campaign as soon as possible will be greatly appreciated.
Records available to Oldsmobile indicate that you are the owner of a 1989 Toronado or Trofeo.
Oldsmobile has determined that your vehicle may have been assembled with front drive axle nuts that may loosen slightly. If this occurs, the clamp load for the wheel bearing may decrease. Although wheel retention and steering control will not be affected, this condition could result in noisy front wheel bearings and lead to reduced bearing life.
To prevent this from occurring on your vehicle, please contact your Oldsmobile dealer to arrange for a service date to have this condition corrected. Your dealer will replace both drive axle nuts and, if necessary, replace affected wheel bearing assemblies. This service will be performed at no charge to you.
Instructions for making this correction have been sent to your Oldsmobile dealer. The labor time to replace both drive axle nuts is about 24 minutes. However, if one or both wheel bearing assemblies must be replaced, an additional one hour may be necessary. Also, please allow additional time for your dealer to process your vehicle.
Please give the enclosed owner reply card to your dealer so they can quickly identify your vehicle and the condition which needs correcting. If you no longer have this vehicle, please let us know by completing the card and mailing it back to us. The postage has been paid for you.
We are sorry for this inconvenience; however, we took this action in the interest of your continued satisfaction with our products.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
