LOW OIL LEVEL MESSAGE (REPROGRAM THE BCM EEPROM)

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1989 E - TORONADOS AND TROFEOS

Some 1989 Toronados and Trofeos built before VIN breakpoint 303986 may have an inoperative "Low Oil Level" message. This condition may result from an incorrect Option Word 2 value being stored in the BCM. (The Option Word 2 value is a number from 0 to 255 representing option content. The BCM uses this value to determine how to operate displays and electronic controls.) To verify the Option Word 2 value:

1. Enter diagnostics and note Option Word 2 (parameter BD91) value. Refer to the 1989 Toronado Service Information Manual, Section 8D, if you are unfamiliar with self-diagnostics.

2. Compare the value to the table below:

Toronado Trofeo

Without VIC** With VIC (U68) Without VIC With VIC (U68) ABS (JL9) 88 216 present 92 220 Non-ABS 72 200 * *

* All Trofeos are equipped with ABS. ** Visual Information Centre

If the values agree, the Option Word 2 is correct and is not the cause of this condition. If the values do not agree, follow the procedure below:

To correct the Option Word 2 value:

1. Select BCM override BS08.

2. Use the "WARM" and "COOL" buttons to raise or lower the Option Word 2 value until it equals the correct value as indicated in the table above.

3. Press and hold the "LOWER" air mode and "DEFROST" buttons ("DEFROST" and "R. DEFOG" on vehicles equipped with VIC option) simultaneously for five seconds.

This will reprogram the BCM EEPROM to the number displayed.

IMPORTANT: The Option Word table printed in the preliminary 1989 Service information Manual and Vehicle diagnostic Reference Card contains an error. Always refer to the table printed in this bulletin (below) or the 1989 Final Edition Service Information Manual when checking the value of BD 91.

Start with option value equal to 0.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
