INCORRECT TRANS FLUID LEVEL REPLACE TRANS FILL TUBE

SUBJECT: INCORRECT TRANSAXLE FLUID LEVEL SHOWS ON FLUID LEVEL INDICATOR, REPLACE TRANSAXLE FILL TUBE

MODELS/YEARS: 1991 TORONADO EQUIPPED WITH HYDRA-MATIC 4T60-E TRANSAXLE (RPO - M 13)

Some early 1991 Toronados were built with transaxle fill tube assemblies that, when checking the fluid level as outlined in the owner or service manuals, could indicate an acceptable fluid level when the actual level is up to two quarts low. This is due to oil splashing higher on the fluid level indicator than the actual fluid level.

Current assembly plant procedures for transaxle fluid fill do not require use of the fluid level indicator to 'top off' oil level. For this reason, no fluid level related problems (slippage, flare on turns, noise, overheating, etc.) are anticipated unless the transaxle has to be serviced.

When servicing the transaxle of a 1991 Toronado built prior to VIN MU301717 R is recommended that a new transaxle fill tube be installed. The new transaxle fill tube part number is 24501159.

Parts are currently avallable from GMSPO.

The new transaxle fill tube can be identified by a white or yellow painted dot at the top of the tube.

NOTE: If it becomes necessary to check the transaxle oil level on an early 1991 Toronado, and a new transaxle fill tube is not immediately available, fill to the level shown in the illustration below.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
