General Motors has determined that some 1988 Bonnevilles built at the Willow Run Assembly Center have incorrect information on the Vehicle Emission Control Information Label. The misprinted label is missing a key phrase identifying the vehicle as being eligible for sale, use, or registration in California. The label is required by the Federal Clean Air Act, and by the State of California.
To correct this error, new labels will be provided for each vehicle involved.
Since the label can very easily be replaced and because we do not want to cause owners unnecessary inconvenience, the new labels have been furnished directly to affected owners from records available to Pontiac.
Owners may install the label personally or request that it be installed by your dealership. Should the latter occur, the label is to be installed at no charge to the owner. A copy of the owner letter is included with this bulletin.
All 1988 Bonneville models with California Emissions (RPO NB2) built at the Willow Run Assembly Center within the following VIN breakpoints:

Involved vehicles have been identified by Vehicle Identification Number Computer Listings. Computer listings contain the complete Vehicle Identification Number, owner name and address data, and are furnished to the involved dealers with the campaign bulletin. Owner name and address data furnished will enable dealers to follow-up with owners involved in this campaign.
These listings may contain owner names and addresses obtained from State Motor Vehicle Registration Records. The use of such motor vehicle registration data for any other purpose is a violation of law in several states. Accordingly, you are urged to limit the use of this listing to the follow-up necessary to complete this campaign. Any dealer not receiving a computer listing with the campaign bulletin has no involved vehicles currently assigned.
Owners will be sent a new label to install as well as notification of this campaign on their vehicles by Pontiac Division (see copy of Owner Letter included with this bulletin).
Dealers are to service all vehicles subject to this campaign at no charge to owners, regardless of mileage, age of vehicle, or ownership from this time forward.
Whenever a vehicle subject to this campaign is taken into your new or used vehicle inventory, or it is in your dealership for service in the future, you should take the steps necessary to be sure the campaign correction has been made before resellinq or releasing the ve ic e.
Owners of vehicles recently sold from your new vehicle inventory are to be contacted by the dealer to ensure that the new label has been received and installed by the owner. It is your responsibility to see that the correct label is installed on these vehicles.

Dear Pontiac Owner:
This notice is sent to inform you that Pontiac is conducting a recall campaign that includes your vehicle.
REASON FOR RECALL
General Motors has determined that some 1988 Pontiac Bonnevilles have incorrect information on the Vehicle Emission Control Information Label. The misprinted label is missing a key phrase identifying the vehicle as being eligible for sale, use, or registration in California.
WHAT WE WILL DO
To correct this error, a new Vehicle Emission Control Information Label will be provided for each vehicle involved.
WHAT YOU SHOULD DO
Please inspect/install the provided label or take the label and your vehicle to your Pontiac dealer for inspection/installation, at no charge to you. To inspect/install the Vehicle Emission Control Information Label yourself, follow these simple steps: e
1. Open hood and locate old label (located on thradiator upper mounting support).
2. a. If new label is smaller than existing label, do not install new label, information is correct.
b. If new label is same size as existing label, clean the surface of the old label with soapy water, wipe dry, remove backing from NEW label and apply over the old label.
If you install the new label rather than asking your dealer to do it or if you have sold or traded your vehicle, please let us know by completing the postage- paid owner reply card and returning it to us. This will assist us in assuring that all affected vehicles have been corrected and also will eliminate follow-up notifications.
Should you choose to have a Pontiac dealer install the label, please contact your dealer to arrange a service date to have this correction made. Take the enclosed label with you. The labor time to perform this correction is approximately five (5) minutes. Please allow additional time for the dealer to process your vehicle. We are sorry to cause you this inconvenience; however, we took this action in the interest of your continued satisfaction with our products.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
