LOW ILLUMINATION OF CONSOLE PRNDL

SUBJECT: LOW ILLUMINATION OF CONSOLE PRNDL INDICATOR IN LOWER OR ALL GEAR POSITIONS (NOTCH OR REPLACE BULB HOUSING)

MODELS: 1992-95 PONTIAC BONNEVILLE

CONDITION:

IMPORTANT: THIS BULLETIN ADDRESSES TWO DIFFERENT LOW PRNDL INDICATOR ILLUMINATION CONDITIONS. PROPER VERIFICATION OF CONDITION IS VERY IMPORTANT TO PROPERLY REPAIR VEHICLE.

CONDITION #1: (1992-94 BONNEVILLE) ============

SOME OWNERS MAY COMMENT ON LOW ILLUMINATION OF CONSOLE PRNDL INDICATOR IN LOWER GEAR POSITIONS (RED POSITION INDICATOR DOTS).

CONDITION #2: (1993-95 BONNEVILLE) ============

SOME OWNERS MAY COMMENT ON LOW ILLUMINATION OF CONSOLE PRNDL INDICATOR IN ALL GEAR POSITIONS (PRNDL LETTERS).

CAUSE:

THESE CONDITIONS MAY BE CAUSED BY A BUILD OR PART VARIATION IN THE ASSEMBLY PLANT.

CORRECTION:

FOLLOW THE PROPER PROCEDURE FOR THE CONDITION INVOLVED. REFER TO THE ILLUSTRATIONS FOR CALLOUTS OF COMPONENT LOCATIONS.

CORRECTION FOR CONDITION #1: (1992-94 BONNEVILLE) ===========================

IMPORTANT: BULB HOUSING IN THIS PROCEDURE IS BLACK.

1. REMOVE TRANSMISSION LEVER CONTROL HANDLE. REFER TO SECTION 8C IN THE SERVICE MANUAL.

2. REMOVE CONSOLE REAR TRIM PLATE BY PULLING UP.

3. REMOVE ASHTRAY INSERT BY PULLING OUT.

4. REMOVE TWO CENTER CONSOLE TRIM PLATE FASTENERS LOCATED BENEATH ASHTRAY INSERT.

5. LIFT UP CENTER CONSOLE TRIM PLATE (SEE ITEM 1, FIGURE 1).

6. PUT SHIFT LEVER IN THE "P" PARK POSITION.

7. REMOVE PRNDL BULB HOUSING FASTENER (SEE ITEM 3, FIGURE 1).

- THE PRNDL BULB AND HOUSING ARE LOCATED ON THE LOWER LEFT FRONT OF THE SHIFTER ASSEMBLY AND CAN ONLY BE ACCESSED IN THE "P" PARK POSITION.

8. REMOVE BULB SOCKET FROM HOUSING ASSEMBLY.

9. PUT A 3MM BY 6MM NOTCH IN THE BULB HOUSING (SEE FIGURE 2). (A 3MM DRILL BIT AND FILE WORKS WELL.)

10. INSTALL BULB SOCKET INTO HOUSING.

11. INSTALL BULB HOUSING ASSEMBLY TO SHIFTER ASSEMBLY (SEE ITEM 2, FIGURE 1).

12. LOWER CENTER TRIM PLATE.

13. INSTALL TWO CENTER TRIM PLATE FASTENERS LOCATED BELOW ASHTRAY ASSEMBLY.

14. INSTALL ASHTRAY INSERT BY PUSHING IN.

15. INSTALL TRANSMISSION LEVER CONTROL HANDLE.

16. INSTALL CONSOLE REAR TRIM PLATE.

CONDITION #2 (1993-95 BONNEVILLE): =================================

IMPORTANT: BULB HOUSING IN THIS PROCEDURE IS GRAY/WHITE IN COLOR AND HAS AN "X" MOLDED INTO THE HOUSING (SEE ITEM 4, FIGURE 1). CONDITION #2 REQUIRES REPLACEMENT P/N 25537162.

1. REMOVE TRANSMISSION LEVER CONTROL HANDLE. REFER TO SECTION 8C IN THE SERVICE MANUAL.

2. REMOVE CONSOLE REAR TRIM PLATE BY PULLING UP.

3. REMOVE ASHTRAY INSERT BY PULLING OUT.

4. REMOVE TWO CENTER CONSOLE TRIM PLATE FASTENERS LOCATED BENEATH ASHTRAY INSERT.

5. LIFT UP CENTER CONSOLE TRIM PLATE (SEE ITEM 1, FIGURE 1).

6. PUT SHIFT LEVER IN THE "P" PARK POSITION.

7. REMOVE ONE 7MM SCREW FROM PRNDL BULB HOUSING (SEE ITEM 4, FIGURE 1). USE 7MM WRENCH.

- THE PRNDL LAMP HOUSING IS LOCATED ON THE LOWER LEFT FRONT OF THE SHIFTER ASSEMBLY.

8. REMOVE BULB SOCKET FROM HOUSING. DISPOSE OF HOUSING.

9. INSTALL BULB SOCKET INTO NEW HOUSING, P/N 25537162.

10. INSTALL BULB HOUSING ASSEMBLY TO SHIFTER ASSEMBLY USING ONE 7MM SCREW (SEE ITEM 2, FIGURE 1).

11. LOWER CENTER TRIM PLATE.

12. INSTALL TWO CENTER TRIM PLATE FASTENERS LOCATED BELOW ASHTRAY ASSEMBLY.

13. INSTALL ASHTRAY INSERT BY PUSHING IN.

14. INSTALL TRANSMISSION LEVER CONTROL HANDLE.

15. INSTALL CONSOLE REAR TRIM PLATE.

PARTS ARE CURRENTLY AVAILABLE FROM GMSPO.
