WATERLEAK AT RIGHT REAR AREA OF REAR COMPARTMENT FLOOR

SUBJECT: WATERLEAK AT RIGHT REAR AREA OF REAR COMPARTMENT FLOOR PAN (APPLY BODY SEALER)

MODELS: 1995 OLDSMOBILE EIGHTY EIGHT, NINETY EIGHT 1995 PONTIAC BONNEVILLE

VIN BREAKPOINTS:

NINETY EIGHT - 325209 THROUGH 325444 EIGHTY EIGHT - 838260 THROUGH 838565 BONNEVILLE - 295878 THROUGH 296761

CONDITION:

SOME OF THE ABOVE LISTED VEHICLES MAY EXHIBIT A WATERLEAK CONDITION AT THE RIGHT REAR AREA OF THE REAR COMPARTMENT FLOOR PAN. THE LEAK COULD POTENTIALLY BE COMING FROM FOUR WELD STUDS WHICH ARE LOCATED AT THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE VEHICLE AND DO NOT HAVE ANY COMPONENTS MOUNTED TO THEM.

CAUSE:

THE VEHICLES AFFECTED WERE BUILT WITH 1996 FLOOR PANS. THE ORIGINAL INTENT WAS TO SEAL THE STUDS INTERNALLY BY USING FLOW SEALER OR SEALING PATCHES AFTER THE VEHICLE WAS PAINTED. SOME VEHICLES WERE BUILT BEFORE THE SEALING PROCESS WAS ADDED. THOSE VEHICLES ARE IDENTIFIED BY THE VIN NUMBERS LISTED ABOVE.

CORRECTION:

1. REMOVE THE REAR COMPARTMENT FLOOR TRIM. REFER TO SECTION 10-8 OF THE APPROPRIATE SERVICE MANUAL.

2. REMOVE THE REAR COMPARTMENT FLOOR INSULATOR.

3. ALLOW THE REAR COMPARTMENT TO DRY COMPLETELY.

4. GENEROUSLY APPLY A BODY SEALER OF MEDIUM BODIED CONSISTENCY TO THE FOUR WELD STUDS VISIBLE AT THE RIGHT HAND PORTION OF THE FLOOR PAN (SEE FIGURE 1).

5. ALLOW THE BODY SEALER TO SET BEFORE REINSTALLING TRIM.

6. INSTALL THE REAR COMPARTMENT FLOOR INSULATOR.

7. INSTALL THE REAR COMPARTMENT FLOOR TRIM.
