Hissing noise in the steering gear | Some noise occurs in all power steering systems. One of the most common noises is a hissing sound. A hissing noise occurs whenever you turn the steering wheel while the vehicle is not moving. This noise will be most evident when you turn the wheel while applying the brakes. Some hissing noise is normal under these conditions. Do NOT replace the valve unless the hissing noise is extremely objectionable. A replacement valve will also have a slight noise and may not correct the condition. Whenever you diagnose a hissing noise issue, inspect all of the steering hoses in order to ensure that the hoses are not touching other parts of the vehicle.
