Assembly Procedure


    Object Number: 344138  Size: SH

    Important: Replace the steering column housing assembly (1) if the steering column housing assembly (1) has been staked 3 times.

  1. Install the steering column housing assembly (1) onto the steering shaft assembly.
  2. Pull back on the tilt lever (2) and push the steering column housing assembly (1) up and towards the column.
  3. Remove the tilt lever (2).

  4. Object Number: 378827  Size: SH

    Important: Replace the steering column housing assembly and the pivot pins if they have been staked 3 times.

  5. Lubricate the pivot pins (1) with lithium grease.
  6. Install 2 pivot pins (1).

  7. Stake the pins in 3 places.
  8. Install the tilt spring only. Refer to Tilt Spring - Assemble - Off Vehicle .

  10. Lubricate the switch activator pivot pin (2).
  11. Install the pivot and pulse switch assembly (1) into the lock housing cover assembly.
  12. Install the switch activator pivot pin (2) into the pivot and pulse switch and the lock housing cover assembly.
  13. If the pivot and pulse switch assembly was completely removed from the steering column, refer to Windshield Wiper and Washer Switch Assembly - Assemble - Off Vehicle .

  14. Object Number: 343866  Size: SH
  15. Lubricate the dimmer switch rod actuator (3) with synthetic grease.
  16. Install the dimmer switch rod actuator (3) into the column housing cover end base plate (2).
  17. Install the column housing cover end base plate (2) into the lock housing cover assembly (1).
  18. Install the lock housing cover assembly (1) onto the steering shaft.
  19. Align the dimmer switch rod to the dimmer switch rod actuator (3).

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  21. Install 3 pan head 6-lobe socket tapping screws. Tighten the screws (1) at 12 o' clock position first, screw (3) at 8 o' clock position second, and screw (2) at 3 o' clock position third.
  22. Tighten
    Tighten screws in same order to 9 N·m (80 lb in).

  23. Install the cruise control connector (3) to the column housing cover end base plate (1).
  24. Install the column housing cover end cap (2).
  25. Install the steering column pass key lock cylinder set. Refer to Steering Column Lock Cylinder Set - Assemble - Off Vehicle .
