INSUFFICIENT HEAT/DRIVER SIDE FLOOR CARPET BLOCKING OUTLET

Customer comments of the driver's footwell ares being inadequately heated may be encountered. This condition may be a result of the heater outlet being blocked by the floor carpet and the main body wire harness.

In order to correct this condition, the following procedures should be followed:

1. Reposition Carpet

The area in question is the vertical portion of the floor carpet which is along side of the tunnel just below the heater outlet. Instead of staying against the tunnel, the carpet "bubbles" out from the tunnel. As a result, the downward flow of air from the outlet becomes trapped between the carpet and tunnel structure and consequently does not warm the footwell area. To properly position the carpet, add two (2) carpet retainer clips, Part Number 10026904, to the plastic support as shown in Figure 1.

2. Reposition Wire Harness

As the main body wire harness routes from the instrument cluster area to the tunnel console, it can block the heater outlet opening. The blockage can be caused by the main harness or by wire branches which fan out from the main harness in the ares of of the outlet opening. The harness and its branches must be positioned away from the heater outlet opening. This can best be accomplished by removing the ground wire attaching screw to the I/P./console structural memeber and winding the loose wire around the wire harness. This essentially shortens the ground wire. When the ground wire is re-attached it will pull the harness rearward and inboard, out of the way of the heater outlet opening. See Figure 2.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
