The Fiero Quartz Speedometer Repair Program has been expanded to the seven AC-Delco Service Centers listed in this bulletin. These are the only AC-Delco Service Centers authorized to service the Fiero speedometer.

An advance exchange quartz speedometer (consisting of a dial, pointer, circuit board, odometer and motor) can be obtained by calling the toll free telephone number of the closest authorized service center.

It will be necessary for you to give the Service Center the R.O. number, VIN and mileage for the vehicle you are requesting an exchange. The exchange unit will be shipped via UPS within 24 hours, along with a memo billing. The memo billing will be canceled when the inoperative unit is received by the service center with a completed ACD-1078 Warranty Claim Form. For out of warranty repairs you will be billed direct by the Service Center.

Please adhere to the following procedure when a vehicle requires dealer service for an inoperative quartz speedometer.

1. Follow the diagnostics procedure in the Service Manual precisely and completely. Many problems perceived by observer to be in the speedometer are actually problems with remote sensors and connectors. Proper diagnostics will identify the source of the problem and avoid unnecessary removal and shipping of functional assemblies to service centers.

2. When diagnostics are complete and the fault is determined to be in the speedometer, call the nearest service center and request the appropriate exchange unit. (Be sure and tell the service center the mileage to which the odometer should be set.)

3. After the exchange unit is received from the service center, remove the inoperative speedometer from the instrument cluster.

4. Remove the exchange unit from the reusable shipping container, and assemble it to the instrument cluster. Use care in handling the exchange unit. Hands must be free of dirt and grease. Avoid touching electronic components on the circuit board, as electro-static discharge can cause some components to fail.

5. Pack the inoperative speedometer previously removed from the vehicle in the reusable shipping container, together with all five copies of the completed ACD-1078 warranty form. Be sure to include a description of the speedometer problem in the "Nature of Problem" are of the ACD-1078 form to assist the service center in isolating the cause. Failure to return the inoperative speedometer in the special reusable container can result in a $10.00 container replacement fee.

6. Enclosed in the reusable container is an addressed shipping label. Attach this label to the outside of the box and ship UPS prepaid immediately to the service center from which you obtained the exchange unit. Return shipping charge can be added to your R&R claim to Pontiac. The dealer copy of the ACD-1078 warranty form will be returned to you and the memo billing will be canceled upon receipt of the inoperative unit at the service center. If an advance exchange speedometer is not needed once it is received by your dealership, it should be immediately returned to the service center noting the reason for the return. In these cases, a restocking charge may be accessed by the service center.

The success of the Quartz Speedometer Exchange Program is dependent upon the prompt return of inoperative speedometers to Service Centers. Your cooperation is essential to maintaining sufficient quantities of exchange stock.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
