PARKING BRAKE ADJUSTMENT PROCEDURE REVISION

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1984 Fiero

The parking brake adjustment procedure for the 1984 Fiero found on page 5-13 of the Fiero Service Manual has been revised. The new procedure is as follows:

When the parking brake is in the released position tension measured in the cables at location D is 555N +/- 15N. The method of adjustment is as follows:

NOTE: All retainers should be installed before proceeding.

1. Hold the threaded portion of cable A to prevent cable twist during adjustment and tightening.

2. With park brake handle fully released, take up slack in cable E at point D.

3. Apply tension preload to cables by adjusting nut B to provide 555N on cables.

4. Cycle the park brake handle three times, returning cable to the released condition before each apply. After the third apply return cable system to released condition and note that the caliper park brake pull levers are against caliper stop bosses and no cable slack exists at point D. If cable slack is present, readjust cable tension to remove slack without the park brake levers moving off the caliper stops.

NOTICE: One tool that is available to measure the cable tension at point D is BT3375K and may be purchased from;

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
