Some 1984 Fiero's prior to VIN EP265969 may experience an early morning condition of no starter engagement or require cycling the ignition switch several times before starter engagement will occur in wet weather or in below freezing temperatures. The condition is a result of moisture accumulation in the starter motor and solenoid actuator area which may affect starter operation.
The condition can be repaired using the following procedure.
1. Remove the starter assembly.
2. Allow the assembly to warm up and drain any moisture accumulation.
3. Check the starter motor for freedom of operation of the armature and inspect for any water contamination.
4. If the starter is repairable (i.e. not heavily corroded or water damaged), replace the original solenold with a new solenoid Part Number 1114566 and reseal the starter assembly as follows:
With the assembly clean and dry, apply a liberal bead of silicon sealer (Part Number 1052915) or equivalent to the split line between the drive end frame, motor and solenoid. Apply sealer on the engine side of the end frame down to the bolt boss and on the opposite side to the cast boss on the end frame. Be sure to fully seal the area between the starter housing and solenoid. Do not cover the vent hole in the bottom of the starter housing (see illustration).
5. If the starter is damaged beyond repair, a new double thru-bolt starter, Part Number 1998503 should be used. To install the new starter motor, the upper thru-bolt should be cut off flush with the nut on those vehicles not having a 2 bolt hole adapter brace in order to faciliatate installation.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
