HYBRID OR PRODUCTION ENGINE IDENTIFICATION

ENGINE BROADCAST CODE DIFFERENCES AND LOCATIONS

VEHICLES AFFECTED: FIERO 2.5L CAMPAIGN ("HYBRID") ENGINE KIT ----------------- There are differences in the 1984 Fiero 2.5L campaign or "hybrid" engine as compared with the 1984 Fiero 2.5L production engine. It is recommended that the type of engine be properly identified prior to servicing. A 1984 Fiero 2.5L "hybrid" engine can be distinguished from a 1984 Fiero 2.5L production engine by the broadcast code.

The broadcast code for the "hybrid" engine is stamped on the rear face of the engine, as shown in the Illustration. The broadcast code for the 1984 Fiero 2.5L "hybrid" engine is "XJC".

The broadcast code for the production engine is stamped on the front of the engine, as shown in the Illustration. The five broadcast codes for the 1984 Fiero 2.5L production engine are as follows:

Z8C Z8F Z8H Z8J Z8K

If the engine is identified as a production engine, service parts information may be obtained from the 1984 parts list for the RPO LR8 (2.5L R) engine. If the engine is identified as a "hybrid" engine, service parts information may be obtained from a special bulletin labeled "Attention Parts Manager" - 1984 Pontiac Fiero RPO LR8 (2.5L R). The special bulletin should be located in the 1988 Fiero 22P Parts Catalog.

All part numbers in this special bulletin will be included in the May, 1988, revision of the Fiero Parts Catalog.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
