Oil Cooler Hose/Pipe Replacement Upper/Lower Pipes

Removal Procedure (5.7L)

Use only double wrapped and brazed steel tubing, if replacement of the automatic transmission oil cooler pipes and hoses is required. Ensure that the tubing is double flared and meets GM Specifications 123 M, or equivalent.

  1. Raise the vehicle. Suitably support the vehicle. Refer to General Vehicle Lifting and Jacking in General Information.

  2. Object Number: 38120  Size: SH
  3. Remove the oil cooler lower hose fitting at the radiator.

  4. Object Number: 38114  Size: SH
  5. Remove the oil cooler upper hose clamp from the upper hose and the pipe.
  6. Remove the propeller shaft. Refer to Propeller Shaft.
  7. Remove the rear axle torque arm. Refer to Torque Arm Replacement in Rear Suspension.
  8. Remove the catalytic converter hanger. Refer to Converter Hanger Assembly
  9. Support the automatic transmission with a transmission stand.
  10. Remove the transmission support member. Refer to Body Dimensions and Underbody.
  11. Lower the transmission stand slightly. This will allow access to the oil cooler fittings at the transmission.

  13. Remove the fitting on the transmission end of the upper pipe.
  14. Remove the fitting on the transmission end of the lower pipe.

  15. Object Number: 38124  Size: SH
  16. Remove the upper pipe from the oil cooler pipe clips.
  17. Remove the lower pipe from the oil cooler pipe clips.

Installation Procedure (5.7L)


    Object Number: 38124  Size: SH
  1. Install the lower pipe to the transmission oil cooler pipe clips.
  2. Install the upper pipe to the transmission oil cooler pipe clips.

  3. Object Number: 38122  Size: SH
  4. Install the fitting on the transmission end of the lower pipe.
  5. Install the fitting on the transmission end of the upper pipe.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the fittings to 27 N·m (20 lb ft).

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  7. Raise the transmission.
  8. Install the transmission support member. Refer to Body Dimensions and Underbody.
  9. Remove the transmission stand.
  10. Install the catalytic converter hanger. Refer to Converter Hanger Assembly
  11. Install the rear axle torque arm. Refer to Torque Arm Replacement in Rear Suspension.
  12. Install the propeller shaft. Refer to Propeller Shaft.

  13. Object Number: 38114  Size: SH
  14. Install the transmission oil cooler upper hose clamp to the upper hose and the pipe.

  15. Object Number: 38120  Size: SH
  16. Install the oil cooler lower hose fitting at the radiator.
  17. Tighten
    Tighten the fitting to 27 N·m (20 lb ft).

  18. Lower the vehicle.

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the fitting on the radiator end of the upper oil cooler hose.
  2. Raise the vehicle. Suitably support the vehicle. Refer to General Vehicle Lifting and Jacking in General Information.

  3. Object Number: 38114  Size: SH
  4. Remove the transmission oil cooler upper hose clamp.

  5. Object Number: 38118  Size: SH
  6. Remove the transmission oil cooler upper hose from the upper pipe.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 38118  Size: SH
  1. Install the transmission oil cooler upper hose to the upper pipe.

  2. Object Number: 38114  Size: SH
  3. Install the transmission oil cooler upper hose clamp.
  4. Lower the vehicle.

  5. Object Number: 38112  Size: SH
  6. Install the fitting on the radiator end of the upper oil cooler hose.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the fitting to 27 N·m (20 lb ft).
