SUBJECT: SERVICE MANUAL UPDATE - SECTION 10 - ADDITIONAL SERVICE INFORMATION FOR THE SPORT APPEARANCE PACKAGE

MODELS: 1996 PONTIAC FIREBIRD

THIS BULLETIN IS BEING ISSUED TO PROVIDE ADDITIONAL SERVICE INFORMATION FOR THE SPORT APPEARANCE PACKAGE IN SECTION 10 OF THE SERVICE MANUAL.

FRONT FASCIA EXTENSION MOLDING

FIGURE 1

(THE NUMBERS INDICATED IN PARENTHESIS THROUGHOUT THIS BULLETIN REFERENCE THE CALLOUT ITEMS WITHIN A SPECIFIED FIGURE).

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT

1. RAISE AND SUITABLY SUPPORT VEHICLE. REFER TO SECTION 0A IN THE SERVICE MANUAL.

2. TURN THE FRONT WHEELS.

3. PLASTIC RIVETS ATTACHING THE EXTENSION MOLDING (7) USING A 7/32 INCH DRILL BIT.

4. BOLT/SCREW (19) ATTACHING THE EXTENSION MOLDING (7).

5. FRONT FASCIA EXTENSION MOLDING (7).

O REMOVE THE EXTENSION MOLDING (7) FROM THE WHEELWELL FLANGE, LIFT UP THE REAR OF THE MOLDING TO REMOVE IT FROM THE RETAINERS (8) AND PULL THE EXTENSION MOLDING (7) STRAIGHT OFF FROM THE FRONT OF THE VEHICLE.

INSTALL OR CONNECT

1. FRONT FASCIA EXTENSION MOLDING (7).

O INSTALL THE EXTENSION MOLDING (7) OVER THE WHEELWELL FLANGE AND, USING A RUBBER MALLET, INSTALL THE EXTENSION MOLDING (7) ONTO THE RETAINERS (8).

2. BOLT/SCREW (19) ATTACHING THE EXTENSION MOLDING (7).

TIGHTEN

O BOLT/SCREW (19) ATTACHING THE EXTENSION MOLDING (7) TO 1.5 N.M (13 LB IN).

3. NEW PLASTIC RIVETS ATTACHING THE EXTENSION MOLDING (7).

4. STRAIGHTEN THE FRONT WHEELS.

5. LOWER VEHICLE.

REAR FASCIA EXTENSION MOLDING

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT

1. RAISE AND SUITABLY SUPPORT VEHICLE. REFER TO SECTION 0A IN THE SERVICE MANUAL.

2. REAR TIRES AND WHEELS. REFER TO SECTION 3E IN THE SERVICE MANUAL.

3. PLASTIC PUSH PIN RETAINERS (20) ATTACHING THE EXTENSION MOLDING (9).

4. PLASTIC RIVETS ATTACHING THE EXTENSION MOLDING (9) USING A 7/32 INCH DRILL BIT.

5. REAR FASCIA EXTENSION MOLDING (9).

O REMOVE THE EXTENSION MOLDING (9) FROM THE WHEELWELL FLANGE, THEN LIFT UP THE MOLDING TO REMOVE IT FROM THE RETAINERS (8) AND PULL THE EXTENSION MOLDING (9) STRAIGHT OFF TOWARD THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE.

INSTALL OR CONNECT

1. REAR FASCIA EXTENSION MOLDING (9).

O WHEN INSTALLING THE REAR BUMPER FASCIA EXTENSION MOLDING (9), START AT THE LEFT OR RIGHT WHEELWELL FLANGE, AND USING A RUBBER MALLET, INSTALL THE MOLDING ONTO THE RETAINERS (8).

2. NEW PLASTIC RIVETS ATTACHING THE EXTENSION MOLDING (9).

3. PLASTIC PUSH PIN RETAINERS (20) ATTACHING EXTENSION MOLDING (9).

4. REAR TIRES AND WHEELS. REFER TO SECTION 3E IN THE SERVICE MANUAL.

5. LOWER VEHICLE.

ROCKER PANEL EXTENSION

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT

1. RAISE AND SUITABLY SUPPORT VEHICLE. REFER TO SECTION 0A IN THE SERVICE MANUAL.

2. TURN THE FRONT WHEELS TO THE RIGHT OR LEFT.

3. BOLTS/SCREWS (11) ATTACHING THE ROCKER PANEL EXTENSION (23).

4. DRILL OUT THE PLASTIC RIVET ATTACHING THE ROCKER PANEL EXTENSION (23) USING A 7/32 DRILL BIT.

5. ROCKER PANEL EXTENSION (23).

O REMOVE THE ROCKER PANEL EXTENSION (23) FROM THE WHEELWELL FLANGE, THEN LIFT UP THE ROCKER PANEL EXTENSION TO REMOVE IT FROM THE RETAINERS (8) AND REMOVE THE EXTENSION FROM THE VEHICLE.

INSTALL OR CONNECT

1. ROCKER PANEL EXTENSION (23).

2. BOLTS/SCREWS (11) ATTACHING THE ROCKER PANEL EXTENSION (23).

TIGHTEN

O BOLTS/SCREWS (11) ATTACHING THE ROCKER PANEL EXTENSION (23) TO 1.5 N.M (13 LB IN).

3. PLASTIC RIVET ATTACHING ROCKER PANEL EXTENSION (23).

4. STRAIGHTEN THE FRONT WHEELS.

5. LOWER VEHICLE.

MOLDING RETAINER REPLACEMENT

FIGURES 1, 2 AND 3

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT

1. EXTENSION MOLDING(S) FROM VEHICLE.

2. DRILL OUT ALUMINUM RIVETS ATTACHING EXTENSION MOLDING RETAINER(S) USING A 7/32 DRILL BIT.

3. EXTENSION MOLDING RETAINER(S).

INSTALL OR CONNECT

1. EXTENSION MOLDING RETAINER(S).

2. ALUMINUM RIVETS ATTACHING EXTENSION MOLDING RETAINER(S).

3. EXTENSION MOLDING(S) TO THE VEHICLE.

FRONT DOOR EXTENSION MOLDING

BECAUSE THE FRONT DOOR EXTENSION MOLDING IS ATTACHED WITH ADHESIVE, REFER TO SECTION 10-1 IN THE SERVICE MANUAL FOR COMPLETE ADHESIVE MOLDING SERVICE PROCEDURES.

FRONT FOG LAMP

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT

1. RAISE AND SUITABLY SUPPORT VEHICLE. REFER TO SECTION 0A IN THE SERVICE MANUAL.

2. PUSH PIN RETAINERS AT THE BOTTOM CENTER OF THE FRONT FASCIA.

3. ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR FROM THE FOG LAMP (1).

4. FOG LAMP EXTENSION BRACKET BOLT/SCREWS (65).

5. FOG LAMP EXTENSION BRACKET (64) FROM THE VEHICLE.

6. FOG LAMP RETAINERS (58).

7. FOG LAMP ADJUSTER BOLT (63) AND SPRING (62) FROM THE ADJUSTER NUT (61).

8. FOG LAMP (1) FROM THE FOG LAMP BRACKET (59).

INSTALL OR CONNECT

1. FOG LAMP (1) TO THE FOG LAMP BRACKET (59).

2. FOG LAMP ADJUSTER SPRING (62) AND BOLT (63) TO THE ADJUSTER NUT (61).

3. FOG LAMP RETAINER (58).

4. FOG LAMP EXTENSION BRACKET (64) TO THE VEHICLE.

5. FOG LAMP EXTENSION BRACKET BOLTS/SCREWS (65).

TIGHTEN

O FOG LAMP EXTENSION BRACKET BOLTS/SCREWS TO 10 N.M (89 LB IN).

6. ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR TO FOG LAMP.

7. PUSH PIN RETAINERS AT THE BOTTOM CENTER OF THE FASCIA.

8. LOWER THE VEHICLE.

EXHAUST TAILPIPE EXTENSION

IMPORTANT

O IF REPLACEMENT OF THE EXHAUST MUFFLER IS REQUIRED, AND THE VEHICLE IS EQUIPPED WITH THE SPORT APPEARANCE PACKAGE, THE EXHAUST MUFFLER TIP NEEDS TO BE CUT BEFORE THE EXHAUST MUFFLER EXTENSION CAN BE INSTALLED. REFER TO FIGURE 6 FOR THE CORRECT MEASUREMENT.

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT

1. LOOSEN THE EXHAUST TAILPIPE EXTENSION CLAMP NUTS.

2. TAILPIPE EXTENSION FROM THE MUFFLER TAILPIPE.

INSTALL OR CONNECT

1. TAILPIPE EXTENSION TO THE MUFFLER TAILPIPE.

2. ALIGN TAILPIPE TO REAR FASCIA. REFER TO THE SERVICE MANUAL.

3. TIGHTEN EXHAUST TAILPIPE EXTENSION CLAMP NUTS.

TIGHTEN

O TAILPIPE EXTENSION CLAMP NUTS TO 68 N.M (50 LB FT).
