Hydraulic Clutch

The hydraulic clutch mechanism engages and disengages the clutch system. The hydraulic clutch mechanism consists of the following components:

  1. A remote master cylinder reservoir
  2. • The remote master cylinder is mounted to the left-hand hood strut bracket.
    • The remote master cylinder is mounted using a push-on retainer.
  3. A clutch master cylinder
  4. • The clutch master cylinder is mounted on the front of the dash using a U-bolt fastener.
    • The clutch master cylinder is operated directly by the clutch pedal.
  5. A clutch actuator cylinder
  6. • The clutch actuator cylinder is mounted inside the flywheel housing on the 3800 L36 engine.
    • The clutch actuator cylinder is mounted on the flywheel housing assembly with the 5.7L LT1 engine.

The hydraulic clutch system sets the clutch pedal height. The hydraulic clutch system provides automatic clutch adjustment. No adjustment of the clutch or the clutch pedal position is required.

When the clutch pedal is pressed down, the hydraulic fluid under pressure from the clutch master cylinder flows into the clutch actuator.

On the 3800 VIN K engine the actuator piston moves the release bearing forward, pressing the diaphragm spring fingers in order to disengage the clutch.

On the 5.7L VIN P engine the actuator piston engages the clutch fork, which moves the release bearing, pulling the diaphragm spring fingers to disengage the clutch.

Hydraulic Clutch Fluid

Notice: Do not use, silicone, mineral, or paraffin-base oil in the clutch hydraulic system. These fluids will damage the rubber parts in the cylinders.

When you add fluid to or refill the system after service operations, the use of hydraulic clutch fluid GM P/N 12345347 or the equivalent is preferred over the standard DOT 3 brake fluid.

Clutch Pilot Bearing

The clutch pilot bearing is an oil-impregnated bearing that is pressed into the crankshaft. Clean and inspect the clutch pilot bearing for excessive wear or damage. Replace the clutch pilot bearing if necessary.
