1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
2. Remove the electrical connectors from the fan shroud.
3. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.
4. Lower the vehicle.



5. Disconnect the intake air temperature (IAT) sensor electrical connector.
6. Disconnect the mass airflow (MAF) sensor electrical connector.



7. Remove the air intake duct.
8. Remove the air conditioning (A/C) drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .



9. Remove the upper radiator hose from the water pump.



10. Remove the radiator hose from the water inlet housing.



11. Remove the two heater hoses from the water pump.



12. Remove the upper radiator support.



13. Remove the fan shroud.
14. Remove the drive belt tensioner. Refer to Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement .



15. Remove the overflow hose from the radiator.



16. Remove the throttle body heater hose from the radiator.
17. Remove the drive belt idler pulley. Refer to Drive Belt Idler Pulley Replacement .
18. Remove the water pump. Refer to Water Pump Replacement in Engine Cooling.
19. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.



20. Remove the crankshaft balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement .



21. Remove the oil pan-to-front cover bolts.



22. Remove the front cover bolts.
23. Remove the front cover and gasket.
24. Remove the crankshaft oil seal from the cover.
25. Inspect for the following:

•	Gasket sealing surfaces for excessive scratches or gouging.

•	Cover-to-oil pan threaded bolt holes for damaged threads or debris.

•	Crankshaft oil seal mounting bore for damage.

•	Oil pan gasket for damage.

Tools Required

J 41476 Front/Rear Cover Alignment (Crankshaft Oil Seal Area)

Important: 

1. Install a new crankshaft oil seal to the front cover.

Important: Apply a 5 mm (0.20 in) bead of sealant GM P/N 12378190 or equivalent 20 mm (0.80 in) long to the oil pan to engine block junction.

2. Install the front cover gasket and cover.



3. Install the front cover bolts finger tight. Do not overtighten.
4. Install the oil pan-to-front cover bolts finger tight. Do not overtighten.



5. Install the J 41476 .

Important: Align the tapered legs of the J 41476 with the machined alignment surfaces on the front cover.

6. Install the crankshaft balancer bolt until snug. Do not overtighten.

Tighten

1. Tighten the oil pan-to-front cover bolts to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).
2. Tighten the engine front cover bolts to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).
7. Remove the J 41476 .



8. Install the crankshaft balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement .
9. Lower the vehicle.
10. Install the water pump. Refer to Water Pump Replacement in Engine Cooling.
11. Install the drive belt idler pulley. Refer to Drive Belt Idler Pulley Replacement .



12. Install the throttle body heater hose to the radiator.



13. Install the overflow hose to the radiator.
14. Install the drive belt tensioner. Refer to Drive Belt Tensioner Replacement .



15. Install the fan shroud.



16. Install the upper radiator support.

Tighten
Tighten the radiator support/air cleaner bolts to 12 N·m (106 lb in).




17. Install the lower radiator hose to the water inlet housing.



18. Install the upper radiator hose to the water pump.



19. Install the two heater hoses from the water pump.
20. Install the A/C drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .



21. Install the air intake duct.



22. Connect the MAF sensor electrical connector.
23. Connect the IAT sensor electrical connector.
24. Refill the engine oil.
25. Refill the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.



26. Install the electrical connectors to the fan shroud.



27. Connect the negative battery cable.

Tighten
Tighten the negative battery cable to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).
