The supplemental inflatable restraint (SIR) helps supplement the protection offered by the driver's seat belt. This is accomplished by deploying an air bag from the center of the steering wheel during frontal crashes. The air bag deploys when the following conditions exist:
• | When the vehicle is involved in a frontal crash of sufficient force. |
• | When the crash site is up to 30 degrees off the centerline. |
The steering column is collapsible. Inspect the steering column after an accident has occurred whether or not the air bag deployed.
The following components are the SIR system components in the steering wheel and steering column:
• | Inflatable restraint steering wheel module |
• | The SIR coil |
Refer to Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) for a detailed description of these components.
