Removal Procedure

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the engine oil level indicator from the guide tube.
  3. Remove one bolt and the guide from the oil pump.
  4. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  5. Remove the engine oil pan. Refer to Oil Pan Replacement .
  6. Remove the timing belt. Refer to Timing Belt Replacement Timing Belt Replacement.

  8. Remove the generator bracket bolt (1) and the generator.
  9. Remove the generator bracket (2) from the cylinder block.

  11. On a vehicle with an automatic transmission, lock the crankshaft by locking the flywheel (1).

  13. Remove the bolt (1) of the crankshaft timing belt pulley.
  14. Remove the crankshaft timing belt pulley (3).
  15. Lower the vehicle.

  17. Remove the 7 bolts and the oil pump from the cylinder block.
  18. Remove the oil pump housing pins from the cylinder block.

Installation Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 34853 Crankshaft Oil Seal Guide
    • J 37747 Crankshaft Front Oil Seal Installer

  1. Install the oil pump pins and the oil pump gasket onto the cylinder block.
  2. Use a J 37747 in order to install the crankshaft oil seal into the oil pump housing (5).

  3. Object Number: 166640  Size: SH
  4. Apply engine oil to a J 34853 .
  5. Fit the J 34853 to the crankshaft.
  6. Important: Ensure that the oil seal lip is not turned out during oil pump installation.

  7. Use the J 34853 in order to install the oil seal over the crankshaft.
  8. Remove the J 34853 .

  10. Apply some GM P/N 12346004 or the equivalent to the thread portion of the short bolt (1) that mounts the oil pump.
  11. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  12. Install the oil pump mounting bolts to the oil pump assembly.
  13. Tighten
    Tighten the oil pump mounting bolts to 11 N·m (97 lb in).

  14. Install the rubber seal (2) between the oil pump (1) and the coolant pump (3).

  15. Object Number: 178317  Size: SH
  16. Use a sharp knife in order to cut off the edge of the oil pump gasket, if there is excess.
  17. Verify that the edge is smooth and flush with the end faces of the pump case and of the cylinder block.

  18. Install the crankshaft timing belt pulley.
  19. Install the bolt of the crankshaft timing belt pulley.
  20. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  21. Install the bolt of the crank timing belt pulley.
  22. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt of the crankshaft timing belt pulley to 130 N·m (94 lb ft).

  23. Install the engine oil pan. Refer to Oil Pan Replacement .
  24. Install the timing belt. Refer to Timing Belt Replacement .

  26. Install the generator bracket to the cylinder block.
  27. Tighten
    Tighten the generator bracket bolts to 23 N·m (17 lb ft).

  28. Install the generator bracket bolt and the generator.
  29. Tighten
    Tighten the generator bracket bolts to 23 N·m (17 lb ft).

  30. Install the new oil seal (3) for the guide tube to the oil pump (2).
  31. Install the guide tube (1) to the oil pump (2).
  32. Use a guide tube bolt in order to secure the guide tube to the oil pump.

    Tighten
    Tighten the guide tube bolt to 11 N·m (97 lb ft).

  33. Install the engine oil level indicator to the guide tube.
  34. Refill the engine oil to specifications. Refer to Approximate Fluid Capacities in Maintenance and Lubrication.
  35. Connect the negative battery cable.
  36. Run the engine in order to inspect the engine oil pressure.
