Removal Procedure
Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing
any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to
the vehicle or its components.
- Disconnect
the negative battery cable.
- Remove the air cleaner assembly.
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
in General Information.
- Remove the six clips and the right side splash shield.
- Use the following procedure in order to remove the air conditioner
compressor drive belt (if equipped):
5.1. | Release the tensioner pulley. |
5.2. | Remove the belt from the crankshaft and the compressor pulleys. |
- Lower the vehicle.
- Loosen the upper adjusting bolt on the generator mounting bracket.
- Loosen the lower mounting bolt on the generator mounting bracket.
- Remove the coolant pump/generator drive belt from the vehicle.
- Raise the vehicle.
- Remove the two bolts that secure the flywheel inspection cover.
- Remove the flywheel inspection cover.
- Lock the crankshaft, for
vehicles with a manual transaxle, by accessing the flywheel through the square
hole (1) as shown.
- Lock the crankshaft, for
vehicles with an automatic transmission, by locking the flywheel (1) as shown.
Important: If the engine is in the vehicle, the crankshaft timing sprocket bolt
(2) must be removed. The crankshaft timing pulley can then be removed. It
is not necessary to loosen the crankshaft timing sprocket bolt at the center,
if the engine is out of the vehicle.
- Remove the five crankshaft timing pulley bolts (3) and the crankshaft
timing pulley (1) from the vehicle.
Installation Procedure
- Install the crankshaft
timing pulley (1). Fit the keyway on the pulley to the key on the crankshaft
timing sprocket.
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Secure the five
crankshaft timing pulley bolts (3) and/or the crankshaft timing sprocket bolt
(2) (if removed).
Tighten
• | Tighten the crankshaft timing pulley bolts to 16 N·m
(12 lb ft). |
• | Tighten the crankshaft timing sprocket bolt to 130 N·m
(94 lb ft). |
- Install the coolant pump/generator drive belt to the following:
• | The coolant pump pulley |
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
in General Information.
- Install the air conditioner compressor drive belt by using the
following procedure:
5.1. | Release the tensioner pulley. |
5.2. | Install the belt to the crankshaft and compressor pulleys. |
- Install the right side splash shield.
- Install the six clips that secure the splash shield.
- Adjust the air conditioner compressor drive belt tension to specifications.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Adjust the coolant pump/generator drive belt tension to specifications.
- Tighten the upper generator adjustment bolt and the lower generator
mounting bolt.
Tighten
Tighten the generator mounting bolts to 23 N·m
(17 lb ft).
- Install the air conditioner compressor suction pipe bracket (if
equipped).
- Install the air cleaner assembly.
- Connect the negative battery cable.
