Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
  3. Remove the retaining clamp bolts of the secondary spark plug wire from the cylinder head cover.
  4. Remove the cylinder head cover nuts and the seal washers that are located under the nuts.
  5. Remove the cylinder head cover (1) from the cylinder head.
  6. Remove the cylinder head cover gasket from the cylinder head.

Installation Procedure

    Object Number: 177848 Size: SH

Notice: Ensure the sealant applied to the component does not block or restrict any passages. A blocked or restricted passage can cause improper flow. Improper flow can lead to component leakage or cause extensive engine damage.

  1. Apply a small amount of GM P/N 12346240, or an equivalent, to the corners of the new gasket for the cylinder head cover.
  2. Install the new gasket for the cylinder head cover to the cylinder head cover (1).
  3. Install the cylinder head cover to the cylinder head.
  4. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  5. Secure the cylinder head cover with the new seal washers and with the nuts.
  6. Tighten
Tighten the cylinder head cover nuts to 5 N·m (44 lb in).

  7. Install the retaining clamps for the secondary spark plug wire (2) to the cylinder head cover. Secure the wire retaining clamps with two bolts.
  8. Tighten
Tighten the wire retaining clamp bolts to 5 N·m (44 lb in).

  9. Install the air cleaner assembly.
  10. Connect the negative battery cable.
