When the headlamps or the parking lamps are ON, the illumination controller controls the illumination of the display. The controller is located on the lower instrument panel to the left of the steering wheel. When the headlamps or the parking lamps are OFF, the display lights at 100 percent intensity. The display is not adjustable.
Set the ignition switch to the ACC or ON positions in order to operate the radio. When the ignition switch is in the ACC or ON positions and the radio is turned OFF, the time will display. All controls will deactivate, except those controls required to set the clock. Refer to Clock Operation.
When the ignition is in the OFF position, you can display the time for approximately 5 seconds by pressing the RECALL button.
Turning the knob clockwise, past the detent will turn ON the radio. Turning the knob further will increase the volume. In order to decrease the volume, turn the knob counterclockwise. Turning the knob past the detent will turn the radio OFF.
Pressing the RECALL button (with the radio on) toggles the display between the clock and the radio frequency. After approximately 5 seconds, the display reverts back to the clock. This dual function button is also used to set the clock. Refer to Clock Operations.
Press this button in order to toggle between the AM and the FM bands. The letters AM or FM will appear on the display, depending upon the band that you chose. The radio will automatically go to the frequency that played when that band was last active.
Press the right end of the SEEK button in order to automatically tune the radio to the next higher station within range. Press the left end of the SEEK button in order to automatically tune the radio to the next lower station within range. In either case, when you reach the end of the band, the seek function will continue to operate in the same direction at the opposite end of the band.
Press and hold the right end of the TUNE button in order to manually tune to the next higher frequency. Press and hold the left end of the TUNE button in order to manually tune to the next lower frequency. If you hold down the TUNE button in either direction for more than 1 second, the function goes to fast tune. On the AM band, the frequency advances in increments of 10 kHz in either direction. On the FM band, the frequency advances in increments of 0.2 MHz in either direction. In either case, when you reach the end of the band, the tune function will continue in the same direction at the opposite end of the band. Release the button when you reach the desired frequency.
This dual function button is also used to set the clock. Refer to Clock Operation.

In order to adjust the balance, perform the following steps:

The cassette player works best with tapes which are 60-90 minutes long. Longer tapes are thinner and may not function properly in this unit. Do not use these longer tapes when you diagnose problems in the cassette player.
The side of the cassette with the tape visible should face to the right when you insert the cassette into the unit. The tape may not be seated squarely in the player if the following conditions occur:
• | You hear no sound. |
• | You hear garbled sound. |
If these problems occur, perform the following steps:
When you insert a metal or chrome tape, the letters MTL will appear on the display.
Once the tape begins to play, you may use the following controls in the same manner as with the radio:

The cassette radio has a feature which determines whether a cassette tape is broken. When the take-up reel spins faster than a set threshold, the player assumes that the tape is broken. The tape ejects. You may disable this feature by pressing and holding the TAPE button for approximately 5 seconds while the ignition is ON and the radio is OFF. The TAPE icon will blink once or twice indicating that this feature has been disabled. The Cut Tape Detection feature will remain disabled until you press the EJECT button.
If a cassette is playing, depressing the AM/FM band button will perform the following functions:
The side of the tape which is playing (top or bottom) is indicated by arrows at the far left of the display.
Activate the fast forward operation by pressing the arrows on the right end of the TUNE (FF) button. This will fast forward the tape in the direction of play. Press the right end of the TUNE (FF) button or press the RECALL button in order to return to normal playing speed.
Important: Pressing the RECALL button changes the tape side in addition to stopping the fast forward operation.
Activate the rewind operation by pressing the arrows on the left end of the TUNE (REW) button. This will rewind the tape opposite to the direction of play. Press the left end of the TUNE (REW) button or press the RECALL button in order to return to normal playing speed.
Important: Pressing the RECALL button changes the tape side in addition to stopping the rewind operation.
Activate the next selection operation by pressing the arrows on the right end of the SEEK (NEXT) button. This will cause the tape to move to the beginning of the next selection. In order for the next selection function to operate properly, the tape must have 3-4 seconds of silence between selections. Press the right end of the SEEK (NEXT) button or press the RECALL button in order to return to normal playing speed.
Important: Pressing the RECALL button changes the tape side in addition to stopping the next selection operation.
Activate the previous selection operation by pressing the arrows on the left end of the SEEK (PREV) button. This will result in one of two actions:
• | If the current selection has been playing for more than 8 seconds, the tape will rewind to the beginning of the current selection. |
• | If the current selection has been playing for less than 8 seconds, the tape will rewind to the beginning of the previous selection. |
Press the left end of the SEEK (PREV) button or press the RECALL button in order to return to normal playing speed.
Important: Pressing the RECALL button changes the tape side in addition to stopping the previous selection operation.
Press the TAPE button or press the RECALL button in order to switch from one side of the tape to the other. Note the arrow in the graphic display.
Pressing the preset 2 button removes noise from Dolby® NR-encoded tapes. (Dolby® Noise Reduction is manufactured under license from Dolby Laboratories Licensing Corporation. Dolby and the double-D symbol are trademarks of Dolby Laboratories Licensing Corporation.)

This CD player is designed to play only 120-mm (4.75-in) discs. All CDs used in this system must display the block-lettered symbol COMPACT DISC DIGITAL AUDIO. If you insert any other disc, you may damage the CD player or the disc. Do not use 76-mm (3-in) size discs, commonly referred to as CD singles. Do not use a 76-mm disc when diagnosing problems in the CD player.
If the letters ERR appears on the display, an error has occurred and the compact disc cannot play temporarily. The following conditions may have caused the error:
• | The road is too rough. The disc should play when the road is smoother. |
• | The disc is dirty, scratched, wet, or upside down. |
• | The air is very humid. If so, wait for an hour and try again. |
Press the RECALL button in order to display the track number currently playing. Press the button again within 5 seconds in order to display the elapsed time for the track. The track number also appears when you insert the disc.
When you press the arrows on the left of the SEEK button (TRACK), the following actions will occur:
• | The audio will mute. |
• | The CD will move to the previous selection. |
If you press and hold the button, the CD will cycle backward. The CD will move one track for each time you press and release the button. The track number appears on the display.
When you press the arrows on the right of the SEEK button (TRACK), the following actions will occur:
• | The audio will mute. |
• | The CD will move to the next selection. |
If you press and hold the button, the CD will cycle forward. The CD will move one track for each time you press and release the button. The track number appears on the display.
When you press the arrows on the left of the TUNE button (REV), the disc will rapidly return to a favorite passage. The current selection will remain audible at a lower volume level during the reverse mode. When you release the button, the CD will play the passage at that point at normal volume. If you reach the beginning of the current selection, the previous selection will begin playing.
When you press the arrows on the right of the TUNE button (FWD), the disc will advance quickly within a track. The current selection will remain audible at a lower volume level during the forward mode. When you release the button, the CD will play the passage at that point at normal volume. If you reach the end of the current selection, the next selection will start.
When you press the preset button 5 (RPT) once, the CD will repeat a selection after that section completes playing. This feature will cancel if you press any of the following buttons:

The word REPEAT will appear on the display while this feature is active.
