Transaxle Side Case Right Case

Tools Required

    • J 23907 Slide Hammer
    •  J 29369-2 Output Shaft Front Bearing Puller
    • J 36850 Transjel® Transmission Assembly Lubricant
    • J 35538 Axle Shaft Seal Installer
    • J 34857 Gearshift Shaft Seal Installer
    • J 34849 Transaxle Shaft Bearing Outer Race Installer
    • J 7079-2 Universal Driver Handle
    • J 34855 Input Shaft Seal Installer

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 155401  Size: SH
  1. Remove one bolt and the speedometer driven gear case from the right case.

  2. Object Number: 422249  Size: SH
  3. Use a screwdriver in order to remove the input shaft oil seal (2) from the right case (1) .

  4. Object Number: 155403  Size: SH
  5. Remove the following items from the right case:
  6. • Two bolts (2)
    • The reverse gearshift lever (1)

    Important: If the right input shaft bearing remains in the right case upon removal of the gear cluster and the gearshift shaft assembly, remove the right input shaft bearing.

  7. Use J 23907 with J 29369-2 in order to remove the right countershaft bearing race from the right case.

  9. Remove the drain plug/magnet from the left case.

  10. Object Number: 155407  Size: SH
  11. Remove the gearshift arm bolt and the gearshift arm from the gearshift shaft.

  12. Object Number: 155413  Size: SH
  13. Remove the following components from the right case:
  14. • The gearshift shaft bolt and the washer (1)
    • The gearshift shaft spring (2)
    • The steel ball (3)

  15. Remove the gearshift shaft (3) from the right case (1) .

  16. Object Number: 422285  Size: SH
  17. Remove the gearshift shaft boot (2) from the case.

  18. Object Number: 422357  Size: SH
  19. Remove the gearshift shaft oil seal (1) from the right case (2) .
  20. Clean all of the case components and the internal parts thoroughly with solvent.
  21. Dry the components.

  22. Inspect all of the components for excessive wear or damage. Replace as necessary.

Transaxle Side Case Left Case

Tools Required

    • J 23907 Slide Hammer
    • J 29369-2 Output Shaft Bearing Puller
    • J 35538 Axle Shaft Seal Installer
    • J 35425 High Speed Hub Installer
    • J 36850 Transjel® Transmission Assembly Lubricant

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 422241  Size: SH
  1. If the left countershaft bearing race is damaged, use J 23907 with J 29369-2 in order to remove the race (2) from the left case (1).

  2. Object Number: 155421  Size: SH
  3. Remove the bolt and the oil gutter from the left case.

  4. Object Number: 422415  Size: SH
  5. Remove the left differential oil seal (1) from the left case.
  6. Clean all of the case components and the internal parts thoroughly with solvent. Dry the components.
  7. Inspect all the components for excessive wear or damage. Replace as necessary.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 155420  Size: SH
  1. Use the J 35538 and a hammer in order to install the left differential oil seal.
  2. Apply J 36850 to the left differential oil seal lip.

  3. Object Number: 155422  Size: SH
  4. Apply Loctite® 414 GM P/N 12345493 or equivalent to the threaded portion of the oil gutter bolt.

  5. Object Number: 155421  Size: SH

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  6. Install the oil gutter into the left case. Secure the oil gutter with the oil gutter bolt.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the oil gutter bolt to 12 N·m (8.5 lb ft).
