Subject:Passenger Air Bag On/Off Message Plate at Front of Center Console

Models:2006 Pontiac G6

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:

Some customers may comment that the passenger air bag on/off message plate at the front of the center console functions correctly but, is loose or has fallen into the console. This condition is caused by the center console retention tab gap.

Recommendation/Instructions:

To correct this condition, DO NOT replace the center console.

  1. Instead, remove the center console to access the back side of the console where the plate clips into the console retention tabs (using labor operation C2860 for 0.6hr).
  2. Then, correctly reposition and clip the plate back into position.
  3. Using a Tie Strap GM Part Number 12337820 (tie strap is 12" long by 1/8" wide), position the strap around the base of the plate and the console retention tabs that retain the plate (on the inside of the console) and pull tight. This will close up the console clips to properly retain the Passenger Air Bag plate.
  4. Using RTV Silicone Rubber Sealant - Black (GM Part Number 12345739), add a dab of sealant to each of the two end retention taps at the tie strap to retain the strap to the retention tabs.
  5. Then, re-install the console.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
