Inoperative Convertible Top/Retractable Hard Top (RHT), Tonneau Cover and/or Attaching Parts (Bulkhead/Hinges) May Be Damaged (Install Tie Strap)

Subject:Inoperative Convertible Top/Tonneau Cover and/or Attaching Parts (Bulkhead/Hinges) May Be Damaged (Install Tie Strap)

Models:2006-2007 Pontiac G6

Condition

Some customers may comment that the convertible top is inoperative

Upon further investigation, the technician may find that the tonneau cover and/or attaching parts (bulkhead/hinges) may be damaged.

Cause

This condition may be caused by either of the following circumstances:

    • The interior upper rear wrap around quarter trim (both sides) to center rear seat upper trim is not properly seated and has caused interference with the center tonneau panel, OR
    • The center tonneau panel is not adjusted properly (up/down or fore/aft) and has caused interference with the rear seat upper trim and/or the bottom inner edge of the rear roof panel.

Correction

  1. Replace the damaged cable/bulkhead/hinge part(s) as necessary.

  2. Object Number: 1852115 Size: MF
  3. Remove all three upper trim pieces (both rear upper wrap around quarter trims and the center rear seat upper trim). Snap all three pieces together and, working from the bottom side of the trim, secure it in two places with a tie strap through the center of the pin attachment.
  4. Tip
Use a tie strap that is approximately 9 mm (0.35 in) wide and 2 mm (0.80 in) thick. Anything longer than 76 mm (3 in) will work since the end is to be cut off. One tie strap will hold the left side rear quarter upper to the center rear seat trim and one tie strap will hold the right side rear quarter to the center rear seat trim, as shown above.

    Object Number: 1852117 Size: MF

Notice: Verify from the rear of the vehicle that all trim pieces are properly seated and will not interfere with the tonneau cover movement cycle. If the trim pieces are not properly positioned, damage will re-occur when the top is cycled.

  5. Reinstall all three pieces together to the vehicle.
  6. Important: When first retesting/cycling the top, go slowly and visually inspect for interference between the tonneau and the seat trim or the interior of the rear roof panel under the back glass area.

  7. Reset and properly adjust the tonneau center panel and flipper doors. Refer to Folding Top Storage Compartment Closeout Panel Adjustment - Front and Folding Top Stowage Compartment Front Outer Closeout Panel Adjustment
  8. Verify that the center tonneau panel and side flipper doors are adjusted properly. Refer to Folding Top Stowage Compartment Front Outer Closeout Panel Adjustment (2006 MY) or Folding Top Storage Compartment Closeout Panel Adjustment - Front (2007 MY).
