    Danger: To avoid any vehicle damage, serious personal injury or death when major components are removed from the vehicle and the vehicle is supported by a hoist, support the vehicle with jack stands at the opposite end from which the components are being removed and strap the vehicle to the hoist.

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the wheels. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.

  4. Install 2 opposite wheel nuts (1), with the flat side of the wheel nut against the brake rotor to retain the brake rotor to the wheel hub.
  5. Warning: Refer to Brake Dust Warning in the Preface section.

  6. Clean the friction surfaces of the brake disc with denatured alcohol, or an equivalent approved brake cleaner.
  7. Inspect the friction surfaces of the brake disc for the following conditions:
  8.    Note: Light surface rust can be removed with an abrasive disc.

    • Heavy rust and/or pitting
    • Cracks and/or heat spots
    • Too much blueing, discoloration
  9. If the friction surfaces of the brake disc exhibit any of the above conditions, the brake disc requires refinishing or replacement.

  11. Using a micrometer calibrated in thousandths-of-a-millimeter, or ten-thousandths-of-an-inch, measure and record the scoring depth of any grooves present on the brake disc friction surfaces.
  12. Compare the groove scoring depth with the following specification:

    Brake disc maximum allowable scoring: 1.50 mm (0.060 in).

  14. If the brake disc scoring depth exceeds the specification, or if too much scoring is present, the brake disc requires refinishing or replacement.

  16. Remove the 2 opposite wheel nuts (1), from the wheel studs.
  17. Install the wheels. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
  18. Lower the vehicle to the ground.
