Info - Headlamp Aiming

Subject:Headlamp Aiming

Models:2004 Pontiac GTO

The headlamp assemblies must be correctly aimed in order to obtain maximum illumination of the road. The headlamps must be checked for correct aim whenever a bulb or lamp assembly is replaced and after any adjustment or repairs to the front end sheet metal.

Regardless of the method used for checking headlamp aim, the vehicle must be at curb weight (meaning the vehicle has a full fuel tank, spare tire in place, correct oil level, etc. but with no passengers in the vehicle). The tires must also be uniformly inflated to their specified pressures.

Important: If the vehicle will regularly carry an unusual load in the rear compartment or tow a trailer, these loads should be on the vehicle when the headlamps are checked.

Headlamp Aiming Procedure

Notice: During headlamp assembly aiming procedures, do not use a cloth or similar material to cover the lens of the headlamp assembly not being adjusted. Damage to the headlamp assembly may result if the headlamp is obstructed in this manner.

This procedure is to be used only when suitable test equipment is not available.

  1. Set up a screen or use a vertical wall, in conjunction with a flat horizontal floor (A). Park the vehicle immediately in front of the screen/wall and mark a horizontal line (B) that corresponds to the center of the low beam bulb.
  2. To check whether the mark is correctly positioned, turn on the headlamps.
  3. Put the vehicle into Reverse gear and move it straight back so that the front of the vehicle is 15 ft from the screen/wall.
  4. Important: The maximum allowable variation in vertical headlamp adjustment is 5 mm to either side.

  5. Aim the left headlamp to illuminate the line (1) as indicated. Aim the right headlamp so that it illuminates the line (2) as indicated. Both of these lines are to be on the headlamp horizontal center line (B).
