GTO Red Brake Lamp On - keywords cluster fluid icon instrument ipc level light low panel park switch

Subject:GTO Red Brake Lamp On

Models:2004-2006 Pontiac GTO

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:

The red brake light is on and the brake fluid level is full and the park brake is not engaged.

Recommendation/Instructions:

There is a resistor in the brake fluid level switch that is used by the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) to diagnose an open in the circuit. If circuit 30 is disconnected from the IPC, if the brake fluid level switch or the park brake switch are closed, or if the switches are disconnected the red brake light will be illuminated.

Normal voltage on ckt 33 (terminal 30 at the IPC) for the brake icon with both of the switches open is 8.5 volts, if the circuit is open it will be 12 volts, and less than 1 volt with either switch closed.

The red brake light will turn on if the voltage on circuit 33 is above 10 volts or below 1 volt.

TIP

Inspect connector C200 for water intrusion. Water intrusion in this connector can allow a current path through other circuits in the connector and cause the voltage to be pulled low on circuit 33. If water intrusion is found inspect the cowl area by the right hood hinge for the water leak.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
