TEA KETTLE TYPE WHISTLE OR HIGH PITCH WHINE NOISE FROM ENGINE

VEHICLES AFFECTED: SOME 1989 N MODELS WITH 2.3 -----------------

Some September built 1989 N models with a 2.3L Quad 4 engine, prior to engine unit number D181098, may exhibit a tea kettle type whistle or high pitch whine noise with a warm engine in the 900 to 1400 RPM range.

Notice: The month and year of vehicle manufacture is printed on the vehicle certification label. This label is located on the rear face of the driver's door. Refer to the following illustration for engine unit number label location.

Cause:

This noise is a result of a high frequency resonance created within the oil pump assembly. This condition does not affect the durability or performance of the oil pump.

Correction:

----------

This condition can be repaired by replacing the engine oil pump, part number 22538689. Refer to Page 6A7-35 of the 1989 New Product Service Manual for engine oil pump removal and installation procedure.
