Subject:Distortion in Top Surface or Water Inside Rear Spoiler (Remove Spoiler, Add Vent Holes and Reinstall)

Models:1999 Oldsmobile Alero
1999 Pontiac Grand Am
with Rear Spoiler (RPO D81)

Condition

Object Number: 618794 Size: MF

Some customers may comment that there is a distortion or low area (1) on the top surface of the rear spoiler center section (Grand Am rear spoiler shown, Alero similar). Typically the distortion occurs when the vehicle is exposed to direct sunlight in very warm or hot ambient temperatures. When the vehicle is removed from the sunlight and allowed to cool, the distortion area disappears.

Also, some customers may comment that there is water inside the rear spoiler.

Correction

Remove the rear spoiler from the rear compartment deck or trunk lid and drill one vent hole in each of the spoiler bases, using the following service procedure.

Important: The vehicle, rear spoiler, adhesive attachment tape and work area are to be above 20° C (70° F) when performing the following procedure.

Service Procedure

  1. Open the rear compartment deck lid and remove the (4) 10 mm hex head nuts that secure the rear spoiler to the lid.
  2. Close the deck lid.
  3. Cover the area surrounding the spoiler with a protective cover.
  4. Using a heat gun, apply heat to one of the rear spoiler bases, keeping a distance of 152 mm (6 in) between the heat gun and the spoiler base/deck lid. Apply heat using a circular motion.
  5. After the spoiler base has released from the deck lid, place a fender cover between the deck lid and the released spoiler base.
  6. Using the same technique, apply heat to the other spoiler base.
  7. Remove the spoiler from the deck lid.
  8. Place a protective cover on a clean work surface and place the spoiler up side down.
  9. Remove any remaining attachment tape from both of the spoiler bases.

    Object Number: 618797 Size: MF
  11. Carefully drill one 3 mm (1/8 in) diameter hole in each of the spoiler bases at the locations shown (1).
  12. Remove any debris from the spoiler bases.
  13. Apply one piece of new attachment tape, P/N 22657254 (Grand Am) or P/N 22657256 (Alero) to each spoiler base.
  14. Important: For proper venting to occur, remove the tape as shown in the next step. Venting will NOT occur if only a hole is punched in the tape.

  15. Using a sharp utility knife, remove a small section (2) of the attachment tape from the end of the spoiler bases where the drilled holes are located. Removal of the tape from both of the holes as shown is required for proper venting.
  16. Important: Removal of the attachment tape covering the drilled holes must be done before installing the spoiler on the vehicle.

  17. Remove any remaining attachment tape and clean the deck lid surface where the spoiler bases attach.
  18. Remove the backing material from the attachment tape on both of the spoiler bases.
  19. Position and install the spoiler on the deck lid.
  20. Open the deck lid and install (4) 10 mm hex head nuts and tighten to 6 N·m (53 lb in).
  21. Close the deck lid.
