BROKEN PARKING LAMP BULBS
If a broken parking lamp bulb is found in a 1988 Grand Prix model, it may be due to water contacting the bulb from a vent hole on the bottom side of the parking lamp housing. Vehicles with VINs prior to JF250743 may be affected.
In the interest of customer satisfaction, the following procedure should be performed on both lamp assemblies (right and left) if the vehicle comes in for service to replace a broken bulb.
1. Remove the 2 retaining screws, lamp housing and disconnect the wiring harness at the bulb.
2. Wipe off any existing dirt on the bottom side of the housing.
3. Apply a sufficient amount of RTV or Silicone Sealant (3M 08661, American/Dominion Sure Seal LZC, Permatex RTV #66C or equivalent) to plug the hole, and apply a piece of tape over the hole and sealer.
Halogen bulbs contain gas under pressure. Bulb may shatter with resultant flying fragments. Headlamp switch must be turned off before changing bulbs. Always wear eye protection when changing a halogen bulb. To help avoid personal injury, do not drop or scratch bulb. Protect bulb against liquids when lighted. Grasp bulb only by its plastic base. Keep out of reach of children. Properly dispose of used bulb.
4. Using a 5mm drill bit, drill a new vent hole in the outboard end of the housing as shown in the Illustration.
5. Replace the bulb as required and reinstall the assembly to the bumper after reconnecting the wire harness. Follow replacement instructions provided with replacement bulb.
6. Repeat steps 2 through 5 for the remaining side.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
