SUBJECT: INFORMATION - SQUEAKS AND RATTLES IDENTIFICATION AND REPAIR PROCEDURES

MODELS: 1997 PONTIAC GRAND PRIX

THIS BULLETIN HAS BEEN DEVELOPED TO IDENTIFY AND PROVIDE REPAIR PROCEDURES FOR SQUEAKS AND RATTLES IN 1997 PONTIAC GRAND PRIX VEHICLES. IT IS NOT MEANT TO CONTAIN ALL POSSIBLE CAUSES AND LOCATIONS FOR SQUEAKS AND RATTLES, BUT WILL IDENTIFY SOME OF THE HARDER TO DIAGNOSE (OR LOCATE) ITEMS. AS ALWAYS, THE CORRECTIONS FOR SQUEAKS AND RATTLES WILL INCLUDE METHODS TO EITHER ISOLATE THE SOURCE OF THE RATTLE, INSULATE THE SOURCE OF THE RATTLE, OR SECURE THE SOURCE OF THE RATTLE.

SOME OF THE MATERIALS USED IN THIS BULLETIN (ANTI-RATTLE MATERIAL SUCH AS FLOCKED CLOTH MATERIAL, OR THE LOOP PORTION OF HOOK AND LOOP MATERIAL WITH SELF-ADHESIVE BACKING) ARE AVAILABLE FROM A LOCAL FABRIC, CRAFT OR TRIM SHOP. OTHER MATERIALS ARE AVAILABLE FROM SPECIFIC SOURCES CALLED OUT IN THIS BULLETIN.

THE SUBJECTS OF THIS BULLETIN INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING:

- VERTICAL WEATHERSTRIPS BETWEEN DOOR AND QUARTER WINDOWS ON COUPES; STICKING TO DOOR SURFACE CAUSING SQUEAKS.

- INSTRUMENT CLUSTER BEZEL; CONTACTING THE SURFACE OF THE INFORMATION MODULE, OR THE AREA BETWEEN THE RADIO AND HVAC CONTROL HEAD CAUSING SQUEAKS.

- DAY TIME RUNNING LIGHT DIODE; CONTACTING PARKING BRAKE AREAS CAUSING RATTLES.

- CENTER CONSOLE TRIM; CONTACTING THE LOWER SURFACE OF THE INSTRUMENT PANEL ON EITHER SIDE OF THE ASHTRAY ASSEMBLY, OR THE CONSOLE TRIM PLATE CONTACTING THE FORWARD EDGES OF THE CONSOLE ASSEMBLY IN FRONT OF THE SHIFTER AREA CAUSING SQUEAKS.

- ASHTRAY ASSEMBLY; MAY NOT REMAIN OPEN OR CLOSED WHILE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION CAUSING RATTLES.

- FOAM ENERGY ABSORBING PADS; MISPOSITIONED ON THE SEDAN REAR DOORS, OR NOT PROPERLY FASTENED ON THE COUPE QUARTER PANEL CAUSING SQUEAKS.

- FRONT SEAT BELT RETRACTOR; GAPPED AT QUARTER INNER PANEL CAUSING RATTLES WHEN CLOSING DOORS ON COUPES ONLY.

- REAR SEAT BACK; UPPER RETAINER HOOKS SQUEAKING AGAINST ENGAGEMENT SLOTS.

- REAR DOOR SOUND QUALITY ON SLAM; SOUNDS LIKE LOOSE DOOR OR DOUBLE LATCHING SOUND.
